Greek Convocation
 

I just went and saw two very impressive speakers who were sponsered by Pan and IFC at my school. Their names are Ginny Carroll and Mike McRee, both Greek, and both working for the past 15 years to keep our Greek communities alive and supporting it. This was an all Greek event and the turnout was very impressive. They spoke about the changes that have to be made in the Greek system for us to keep it alive. Some of it was very hard to listen to because they made sure to point out all the things that no Greek really wants to hear. Things like binge drinking, lower numbers than in years past all over the Greek community, and not living to our ideals.
One of the things that stuck out in my head was an explanation of why Greeks are held to a higher standard than anyone else.
Do we join our GLO's by our own choice? Yes.
Does anyone force us to join? No.
Did most of us take a pledge or oath to uphold certain ideals? Yes.
How long did we pledge to uphold those ideas? For Life.

We are held to a higher standard because we are the only groups on campus that pledge to do that *FOR LIFE*. And we do it by choice. We choose to hold ourselves higher, and we should choose also to keep those ideals that we pledged about high in our heads and hearts.
What if instead of our greek letters, we had our ideals on our shirts? Then what would people think or say about us when we do everything that we do. Are we upholding the things that we pledged to hold close?

Just some questions to get you thinking. Anyway, if you get the chance, I would absolutely recomend that you get these guys to speak at your school, they were very insiring.

Do they have have a email/website where they could be reached? I think it would be a good idea to have them come to my school.

not that I could find, but I can contact pan and get info if you would like. I think that they are a great benifit to have as speakers at a school with any sort of Greek population. We have one of the largest Greek systems west of the Misisippi, so this really was something listen to.
