Greeks that don't follow their ideals....
I in no way don't want to start a flaming war and I will not mention names but I'm really pissed off about greeks that don't follow their ideals. I've had a bad experience with a certain group and it seems like even in letters they don't respect people. I check their website just to see what type of organization they are set up to be and it seems like everything their website stated was not being acted out in real life. If you are proud to wear your letters then aren't you supposed to live your letters? What I mean by that is if you are instructed to respect people, foster unity within the greek community, and to respect the rules of your fraternity then you should live up to them.

Unfortunately, those types of people exist in every Greek lettered organization.
What is truly sad is when years --sometimes decades-- of less than ideal moral leadership in a chapter causes it to stray so drastically from its principles, that there is no way a chapter can uplift itself from within. My chapter of APO has definitely been through its own ups and downs. To this day, we are not known for being the most friendly of chapters. But, because of our alumni dedication and unique chapter traditions, our chapter continues to evolve. Instead of replicating the same pledging (some would say hazing) activities of our forefathers and foremothers, those same Brothers have stuck around to tell us that they way they behaved was wrong, and that they expect us to be BETTER than they were. As a group of 18-21 year olds, my chapter still makes certain mistakes, but as an Alumnus, I have pledged myself to be available to them, whenever they need me. We're not perfect, but with a President of the United States, ambassadors, businessmen and women, a fashion designer, university presidents, etc, within our ranks. . .Mu Alpha has a good kind of pressure to hold the standards of Alpha Phi Omega high. |
Nobody is perfect. That's why they're called "ideals." If the standards we try to live up to and the things we wanted to accomplish were easy, it would have a more prosaic name, say, "stuff we wanna do. " ;)

IDeals are vague. Ideals do not translate easily into behaviors either.
Also, there is no training for people in how to live a series of small behaviors that promote their ideals. This would give integrity in the moment. Further, because the ideals are so vague, people are free to intepret what behaviors promote their ideals with impugnity. So your idea of their ideals, and their idea of their ideals may be totally different. One of the best examples is that the ideals have been constant, but certain races were excluded from membership in many HWGLO's (Don't give me any grief for using the word either), but are no longer excluded. And while there is a policy in place about sexual orientation, I am sure some chapters still exclude based on it. *shrug* Given all of the above its small wonder there are discrepancies. You're just pissed because they act like assholes . . .:) LOL Thats a whole nother disussion. |
Panda that "certain group" is very ignorant if they mess with you only because you're GLO is letter off from their's (as I've said before). Just ignore them and have fun in KKY.
That "certain group"'s SDSU chapter is very cool. |
Well, Panda, im pretty sure i know who youre talking about and i will say ive had a few problems with these guys as well, but as obvious as they are with some of the things they do, i dont see how its gonna get them anywhere but kicked off campus. Every chapter of every fraternity has its differences, im sure there are KKPsi chapters like that somewhere. Most chapters that engage in that kind of behavior will be found out and dealt with.
