Yeah, he's a Pike. Two of my chapter brothers road tripped down to FSU (from Kansas City) and said that they had a blast with those guys.

Every campus needs an article like that in their paper!

You know, maybe it's time we all started submitting articles like that to our school papers. Or encouraging our actives to do that if we're alumni. We hate all of the negative press we get, so maybe it's time we do something about that.

There's A Lesson For Us Here
 

The reason the young man was able to publish this article is that he is an editor of the paper. The reason he is on the staff is that the owner of the paper is Greek, and he solicited fraternities to provide members for his staff. More often than not, these campus papers are staffed with virulently anti-Greek students. It wouldn't matter how many letters we wrote, or how much we complained, they'd laugh and continue being hateful.
The lesson for us is to actively infiltrate these campus papers with good people. They're always looking for capable writers, editors, sales people, designers. Once upon a time, journalists and Journalism reflected the mainstream of American values and respect for its institutions. Today, far too often, journalism is the safe harbor for wacko, agenda-driven radicals and anti-tradition extremists.
There is no Journalism School at FSU. In this particular case, this specific young man was chosen by his fraternity, told that he was going to join the newspaper staff, and delivered to the paper's front door. Turns out he is a fine writer, and has made himself an important part of their team.
We should do this on every single campus.

And that is why, though I am a journalism major, I will not write for the Daily Aztec.

Aside from the debates over how "PC" our mascot is, to rants by our radical columnists saying that our generation is full of teeny bopper slackers and stoners who don't care about what really going on, our newspaper is VERY anti greek. They won't report about a fraternity at SDSU raising money for charity, but they'll go out of their way to report on the incident at Auburn, all the way across the country.

A question -- is your paper at FSU completely independent of the university? Your post, with the "owner" reference, implies that.
And as for greeks and the paper, greeks have to make an effort. Everybody's right on this. I went to USC in the 1980s, and we had a j-school. But we also had a decent balance of people. I wasn't an AKA at the time, but one of my better friends, the sports editor, was a Sigma Nu.

Historically, the Florida Flambeau (which merged with the FSView a couple of years ago) is virulently anti-Greek.

Bolingbaker is right. I was a journalism major when I first started college (not FSU) and wrote for the campus paper for two years. Never once while on the staff was I allowed to write a positive Greek article. The one time that I finally got clearance to write a Greek-related piece, I was shot down by the editor who told me that she wasn't putting any biased Greek article in her paper, and instructed me to never write another article like it again. :eek:

The content of the article she found offensive? It was a write-up of the philanthropy work that individual Greek organizations were currently involved with on campus. :rolleyes: I left the paper not too long after that incident, thoroughly disgusted by the anti-Greek staff.

Question About "Ownership"
 

In answer to the question about ownership of the paper, yes, the FSView is an independent paper, with cordial, informal relations with the University. The Florida Flambeau was a hate-filled screed whose vitrolic attacks on Greeks finally brought a boycott of advertisers that weakened them financially. The competing paper, the upstart FSView, actually purchased the Flambeau name.
The important point, well illustrated by responders here, is that we will never be successful trying to turn the hearts of those whose hatred for us flows from their twisted, radical ideologies. Their papers must be infiltrated, and then they must be replaced.

Ah once again some form of Yellow Journalism has reared its ugly head!

But at least this story has a fairytale ending about the tail biting the dog!:)
