Fur Flies After Road Workers Paint over Dead Badger

LONDON (Reuters) - Local officials in Britain were reported to be furious after road workers apparently painted a white line on the side of a highway right over the furry body of a dead badger.

Britain's Sun newspaper on Tuesday splashed a photo of the badger across half a page, saying the picture was taken by a passerby who saw it on the side of the highway in Somerset, southwestern England.

The freshly-painted white line at the road's edge went right over the dead animal's back.

"This is totally unacceptable and we will be asking for an explanation," the paper quoted a local government spokesman as saying.

The lines were painted by an independent contractor, he said.

EW, GROSS! How could they have NOT seen that laying in the way?!?!
Speaking of which, who is responsible for removing dead animals from the road?!?! I saw a dead deer in the road once and it about made me cry.

Hootie, I always want to cry when I see dead animals lying in the road, too.

I just don't understand how somebody could hit a dog or cat or any other kind of pet and just leave it lying in the middle of the road. I absolutely would get out of my car to see if it's alive, and if not, I would be decent enough to move it to the side of the road so that the owners could retrieve it easily. :(

XOXO,
Annie, who hopes she NEVER EVER EVER runs over somebody's pet.

That would never have happened in Wisconsin (the Badgers), but they might try to run over a Wolverine.

When I was in college, a dog ran out in front of me as I was driving to a meeting or something, and I hit it. I stopped and a couple of girls who were walking along stopped also. The dog was still alive, and I think they took it to a vet.

Later that night, I was drinking at a bar at Ohio State, and the two girls came in and walked up and said, "Hey, aren't you the guy who hit the dog?"

What are the chances of that?

I think the dog lived by the way.

My cousin hit a deer in upstate New York. It jumped out of the bush and onto the hood of her car. She was injured and the car destroyed, but the deer just ran away.

When we lived in Maine, every once in awhile the local paper would carry a little blurb about someone's car getting into an altercation with a moose. The meese (is that the plural form of moose?) seem to be undefeated. They're HUGE.

I was in the driving home from my dads house one night and I saw a deer on the right side of the road. It was walking slowly towards my car so I actually crossed the double yellow line and parked my car on the opposite shoulder of the road. What does the deer do? It rams right into my car back by my gas tank and then runs away. I started freaking out about my car being damaged...I got out and looked at my car...NOTHING! The deer didn't make a dent in my car or anything.

I think this was a suicide mission gone wrong for this deer.

I think it is beyond tacky for them to have painted over the little guy.

I am such an animal lover it pains me to no end to see road kill. Because I've been spending so much time in my car lately, I've seen much too much lately -- cats, dogs, everything. It makes me cry and freaks me out every time. Not that long ago, I saw someone run over a possum at a toll booth, and last week the car in front of me hit a squirrel. It's so awful to see it happen, and especially when the driver doesn't seem to give a crap.
:(

Although I don't know whether or not these folks ran over the animals intentionally, I am entirely convinced that people who do run over little critters purposefully are going to burn in hell.

XOXO,
Annie, a huge animal lover.

When I was in college, a guy was investigated for playing hackey sack with a hamster.

I thought I hit a bird (am almost positive I did) and I started crying....I felt SO bad. And it was a tiny little birdy. I'm just such an animal lover that I'll slow down for anything making it's way across the street...rabbits, squirrels...old ladies walking their CATS ...lol
