Question about sorority colors...
Currently I am a pledge of a sorority!!! But, their colors are very masculine, it's navy and hunter green. I know that they won't change the colors, but I was wondering when you buy shirts and stuff from like greek101.com, do you have to get the shirts in the sorority colors or could you just use the color of the sorority and add a bright color in for accent (for example, hunter green shirt with pink letters)?

Our colors are Azure Blue and White and I had letters in ever pattern and fabric imaginable. Whatever looks good on you I say! However, I made it a tradition to buy my little sisters a set of blue and white letters just so that they have those as well in their closet.
Letters are a fun part of being a collegiate, enjoy it! |
Being the head smart ass on the site, did you pledge for colors?
I would say No, resoundingly so! You Pledged for the Ladys that you met and the Ideals that their Soroity stood for! I do not care for the Colors of My Fraternity, but when You put My Coat of Arms up against anyones, it is Fantastic! I am working on Polo Shirts for My Fraternity and you put Hunter Green Shirt with Gold Letters, or Purple with Gold Letters, white shites with Purple Letters, or Yellow Shirts with Green letters they look fantastic! Read Your History and find out why they picked those colors and maybe it will give you an insight as to why You have those Colors! You Pledged for a certain reason, do not forget that!;) |
Kappa's colours are sky and sea. At Convention I saw some of the ugliest sets of letters on the face of the earth, including a set that was hot pink and electric green. Holy 80s!
Also, I don't know that I'd classify colours as being of one gender or another. Look at Chi O's cardinal and straw. Those are what girls in my preschool referred to as "boy colours." I got made fun of 'cuz I liked to wear red. They said I dressed like a boy. I got over it. And I had a government teacher who loved pink. He always wore pink sweaters and pink ties that his wife bought him. He also didn't wear undershirts so we could see his hairy nipples, but that's a different story entirely. Ok, tangent. Sorry 'bout that. I'd enjoy your colours, but feel free to express yourself. |
You can order whatever colors you want !!! I know my chapter gives each new member "chapter letters" after initiation that are the soror colors. (King Blue, I.E. navy sweater, with Gold letters) but that is just so we all have some sort of matching ones. Actually every NPC org at my school does that. Alpha Gam has grey sweaters with red green and buff (each letter is a different color) and the Alpha Phis have grey sweaters with bordeaux, so each chapter at my school all has matching letters...but other than that GO CRAZY get whatever fabric or colors you want I have a black shirt w/ purple leopard letters on it !

KD's official colors are olive green and pearl white.....I wasn't crazy about the olive green on t-shirts. Most KD shirts I see use some variation of green.
Get some cool Grateful Dead bear letters. I saw those in some magazine and they were so cute!!! |
Much to the surprise of all the girls I know, and to the chagrin of new pledges, the colors of Beta Theta Pi are "Delicate shades of pink and blue." Definetly not the most masculine of colors. When ordering gear from websites and catalogs and such I can promise you that you don't have to order in your colors.
Basically, try to find times that your comfortable with to wear the colors. For me, wearing a light pink tie with a light blue shirt and a dark suit is appropriate. Maybe for you that time will be with a polo shirt or something else...but like you said the colors won't be changing. Gradually you'll develop an affection of some sorts to them simply because of the meaning they'll carry for you. |
How many people think pink and green match????
I have lots of DZ stuff in other colors. At the University of Tampa, we have two jerseys: one that is a sister's jersey (green with pink letters) and a nickname jersey from our big sis. Mine is blue and silver. Jen |

:) Funny that you brought that up, one of my panhellenic friends is a Kappa, and I was over her apartment this weekend, hanging out and doing some panhellenic planning for 2003. Well she was a collegiate in the dreaded '80s and she kindly brought out her beautiful scrap book, for us to pour over...her preference dress was sea and sky colors...yep both. With enormous puffy sleeves and a sash with a big bow in the back. I say yeah for the '80s we wore mutton sleeves with pride back then!!! She's coming over my place this weekend so she can look at how big my hair was in the early '90s! :) |
My favorite Phi Sig letters are my family's leopard print ones :) Theyre ghetto fab!
Like everyone else said, you dont have to have things in your orgs colors... frankly I get sick of blue and gold... cos its Clarion's colors, so Im wearing it for band etc, and its also Pennsylvania's colors... so I see it tooo much! :) |
I love pink and green . They are very preppy. :)
I love the 1980's. Many of us rushed and pledged in the 1980's when it was called rush and pledge. :p Many more on GC were born in the 1980's. You can buy letters in any colors you want, but I suggest that you buy a set in your sorority's colors. :) |
Go wild! You don't "have to" stick to your sorority's colors when buying letters. I have a few sets of floral-print letters, and the only green there is the leaves in the floral print.
Does your sorority have a symbol or mascot that you might find on printed fabric? For instance, if your mascot is the leopard, get leopard print. |
Re: Question about sorority colors...
Hi pledge! Congratulations!
In another thread, you said you wouldn't yet state which local you are pledging, that's cool. But since your org is local, I suggest you talk to your Big Sisters about this question. They just might have a tradition of only wearing shirts in the colors of the sorority. There are chapters and even entire organizations like this. The store can make them however you want, but you should follow the rules of your org. |
If you think that navy and hunter are not the most feminine colors in the world, try thinking of mine...brown and mode, or light and dark brown. Yet even with the double brown, that hasn't prevented us from reaching ceiling.
Your colors are there for a reason, but that's not what attracted you to that sorority. Keep that in mind, and have a ball making letters in every possible combination of every other color! |
hehe, let's hear it for the stoplight colors of Alpha Gam! ;) :p None of the sisters in my chapter have red, buff, and green letters (although I personally would like to get some). Your letter shirts should be as individual as you are, so have fun when you order them! :)
By the way, I have hunter green and navy blue plaid letters on a white shirt, and I think they look nice. |
