Should I email them?
I found a website on a sorority in which I'm interested, and it lists the email addresses of all the members. I was wondering (I know I can't ask any q's about Rush), should I email them just to say "Hey, I like your website" and to ask them questions about All-Sing and about their philanthropies? Would this be okay, or a big no-no?

Hey girl,
I did the same thing and emailed the sorority I was interested in. The email went out to every girl in the entire house, but I sure got all the info I needed! Plus, once rush came around, lots of girls knew who I was (although I was known as that girl who emailed everyone for a while!) |
Cool beans. So did you get into that sorority, or another one? Also, it listed their AIM screen names, and I added them to my buddy list LOL. Yeah, they'll probably think I'm crazy j/k. By the way, what did you say in your email to them?

Unfortunately, I didn't get in. But don't let that stop you! I'm rushing again and I'm pretty confident this time around. In my email I just mentioned that I was impressed with the website, and I was curious as to when rush was and what pertinent info I needed to know. I asked if someone could give me a quick note back, and I got tons of replies. Everyone was totally sweet about it. If they put the information out there, they most likely expect people to use it. But I wouldn't suggest IMing them like crazy or anything!

Tink,
Ok so I keep aswering you, but here I go again. Ok I did the same thing. But it told us who to contact and it turned out th be the chapter pres. I ended up sort of begining a friendship with her. We never met while thiss was going on, but i got to know her. While I was going through recruitment She was interning for the semester and i still didnt meet her. But she had told the girls of the house and they knew to look out for me. So Most of the girls in the house new that i was interested in the house. Well it turns out that I did get in and I am so glad I did it. I wouldnt have gone thru recruitment if i didnt. So go for it, worst thing that happens they dont answer you back, or they turn out to be rude. And then it was probally not the house for you. Good luck and let me know how it goes. Mairin |
Do not go e-mailing everyone in the house! If there is contact info for the president, feel free to ask a question or two. If the contact info is for the webmaster, you can drop her a line that the site looks great, and ask who to contact with general questions.
Try something like "Hi, my name is such-and-such. I saw your sorority webpage and it looks great. I was involved in activity and activity in high school, and it seems like a sorority is a great way to stay involved in college. Can you provide me with more information on recruitment? Thank you!" This will put your name in their heads, and briefly show off some of your activities (Don't list them all, just the big leadership or volunteer things). Be aware that they will think you have contacted every chapter. Also, the response may be very basic, simply referring to Panhellenic recruitment. This is nothing personal, but they want to be careful to follow local rules. Hope that helps. |
If you are going to e-mail the chapter, only send a message to one person - either the president or the recruitment chair.

I put all of them on my buddy list--and one happened to be online. I IMed her and said "I saw your email on the ------------ website" and I asked her about All-Sing, and what her major was, etc. She told me she was a Rho-Chi. Oops, I found out another one! I promised I wouldn't tell though LOL. I feel kinda like I'm bugging her, though. Maybe I should stop while I'm ahead. My screen name on there has my real first name in it LOL.

I just wanted to clear something up- I didn't send an individual reply to every girl, I just sent one email out to "XYZ@stateU.edu" and it went to everyone!

Thanks! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif On the front page it said "if you have any questions, feel free to email____" and it was the Vice Presidents' email, so I think it would be best for me to email her.

Tinkerbell,
I come from a southern organization. and being the former Recruitment Chair, I would highly advise you not to email or im any members of a sorority to ask them questions. In my organization, you would have been flagged early on and everyone would be keeping a close eye on you. |
I agree with what was said earlier. Email just one person, either the president, the recruitment chair, or the general chapter's email. On our site we list everyone's email and one for the chapter. So far this summer we've received a few inquiries which makes the recruitment chair feel really positive about the upcoming year. (it's nice to know women are interested in us http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif )

Tinkerbell, I agree with Maggiekay. DO NOT IM sorority members with questions!! You will find out all you need to know during rush. You don't want to be known as the desparate, annoying girl who kept IMing sisters. I don't mean to sound harsh and I know you're eager but just relax. You will end up in the right house for you.

I have to disagree with a couple of comments on here. I also am in a sorority located in the south and I, as well as my sisters, LOVE to hear from girls who are interested in us. In fact, we like to meet new girls all the time...and it's even better when these girls take the initiative and effort to get to know us first. However, I would have to agree with others and say only to email the Recruitment Chair (generally the President has many other responsibilities too numerous to name). AND I would stay away from IMing them...it's a little too personal in my opinion and it may catch them off guard. But I do wish the best of luck to you!
