"A world gone insane"
Has it occurred to anyone else that we seem to be going nuts?
Consider the top threads this week (last week of August, 2002)> *A fraternity member and student body officer appears in a porn flick. *A fraternity brother is thrown off campus for posing fully clothed in Playboy. *A local fraternity chapter is charged with attempted murder. *Members of several fraternities appear in a porn flick. *Fraternity brother dies after being hit by a softball. *Sorority chapter closes due to lack of membership. I'm sure there are others that don't pop into my mind. Are we under a constant full moon or what? Geez... |
I would think that many of these are coming to light just now because it is the beginning of the school year for many of us.
Some issues were hanging over from last year and some couldn't manifest themselves until just now. I hope that I'm right and that things slow down a bit in the next few weeks. |
i was thinking the same thing about how crazy the world is getting.. especially on my campus- eek...

"...And I, for winking at your discords too, have lost a brace of kinsmen, All are punished. ALL are punished!"
Shakespeare When we, as alums, turn a blind eye to actions we know are wrong, we perpetuate the problems. I have been guilty of this... When active members ignore the potential damage of their actions or the actions of a brother or sister, they too perpetuate the problem. It may be a "blue" mood- I feel that standards, character and personal responsibility have been cheapened so dramatically that what we see happening on campuses today is the culmination of a society, in general, that seeks instant gratification and self promotion at ANY cost. I do not believe that GC is a true reflection of Greeks. I feel, with a few notable exceptions, the members of GC reflect what Greek Life SHOULD be, not how it actually is. Like I said, could be a blue mood. |
Damng JWOW, you are in the dirty funk!!!!
i SOMETIMES DONT BLAME YOU! It is heart breaking to read some of the things that do on at Greek Houses! We as Alums sometimes need to police what the Active Chapters are doing! If we dont, then the Schools and Internationals will. This more times than not lead to disaster for the Chapters! They still need a figure to look to who is older! I read on one of the things I get is that a SPE Chapter were the first Greek Org on the Campus to have a Faucilty Advisor. We have always strived to havce a Facualty Advisor who we Initiate if he shows he wants to work with us and sticks with it! We have a Great one now! He sent me an e-m after we had our mentoring session last weekend with the Chapter. "It was a pleasure being and discussing many things with you. I find it rather funny that there was # 1 and # 599 working together and we are about the same age" "I also find it rather odd that now I call my son with a lower # now also my Brother!" While most Greek Orgs with Houses do not have House Mothers anymore, there is no restraint on the young people who are joing our Orgs. There must be a concerted effort by Alums to work with the Chaptere, getting Faucalty Advisor who can help run some interference for the Chapters! We are not policing them but advising them for their own good! My guys know that there are many Alums that are available to them at anytime for help! Brother Killingsworth # 599 is available at all times and does it out of a labor of love even tho he is the new kid on the block so to speak!!!!!:) Well I said alot and dont know if it helped? Do what you can and you will find that you will once again feel the enjoyment! DAlum and Hoosier are not doomsayers, they are just pointing out the facts! Sometimes it dont look good! But there are many other Chapters out there who do good but dont get recognition only for the bad done, not the good! |
It's not our fault
Our current undergrads and our GLO system are the victims of Dr. Spock and his ilk, who ruined the last 40 years with liberalism, and "if it feels good, do it".
Hopefully the great principles which are in all of our pledge manuals will soon return to life, parents will set standards and goals for their chiildren, and commmon sense will lead our colleges and chapters. If not, we'll just build more jails and convert more chapter houses into campus parking and offices. |

I couldn't agree more! Hoosier, I have noticed you are interested in news. I meant to save it, but there was an article in the LSU Reveille about Delta Chi returning to campus. Now it's lost. Tom, it's just that the people who should be listening and joining in these discussions are probably not even aware a GC exists! The membrs of GC are here because they DO care. I guess the ball is in "our" court. If we and those solid individuals of character and strength don't raise the bar, who will? Hoosier continues-Hopefully the great principles which are in all of our pledge manuals will soon return to life, parents will set standards and goals for their chiildren, and commmon sense will lead our colleges and chapters. From your lips... |
