Job Dilemma
 

I'm looking for some advice here... I am facing quite the dilemma :(

I'm a software engineer with great credentials (if I do say so myself ;) ) - including a master's degree. A few months ago, I was laid off, and since then I have found absolutely nothing in my field.

A couple of weeks ago, I was offered a part-time job. The problem is that they want me to commit for the entire school year (through early June 2003). Since they needed someone immediately, they offered me the job on a trial basis through mid-September. I do like the job - the pay isn't a fortune, and it's definitely not my field, but it's something.

Basically, I can either (a) quit after mid-September, (b) offer to stay on without committing, or (c) commit and maybe try to find a second part-time job. Or (d) some of the hours that I'd have to work are on Sunday mornings; I could commit to this for the year, but not give a firm commitment for the weekday hours. Though, I'd doubt they'd go for (b) or (d).

My husband does work full-time, so it's not like the bills won't get paid if I don't take this job. But I'd be kicking myself if I turned it down to look for work, and then next June rolls around and I'm still out of work.

So, any advice??? :(

Ima give you my advice.

Stay on. If your are like me and the rest of the GC kids, you prolly got billz to pay and such. Stay on. Commit for now. If you do get a new offer in your field (how super likely is it in this economy right now, anyway?) take it then. I understand that you dont break your word, babydoll, rent is more important than your word. Id gladly have someone call me a liar if it means I aint gotta be sleepin up under the overpass at I-10 and Fresno. IF you can give them 2, preferably 3 weeks notice, thats all anyone can ask for. Plus if you do leave, they cant hate you 'cause of the whole God thing. So thats cool too.

You gotta look out for you. If you dont no one else will.

I say try for (B) and see how it goes. Personally, I'm about to take a "project based" assignment that I don't really want , and will screw up my unemployment pay but I gotta do something. At this point, no one knows what the economy is going to do. I may end up being a receptionist at the vet clinic and I've been looking for PR jobs. Who knows, by working there you may meet someone who can help you down the road.
