Hi girls-
I will be going through rush in a few short weeks (August 8th) at the University of Oklahoma. I was wondering how pertinent high school gpa is where fall rush is concerned. I made fairly mediocre grades in high school but was really involved in extracurriculars and community service. The Panhellenic booklet says that in order to receive a bid, you need around a 3.0. I had a 2.9. If a girl is well rounded in other areas but has a somewhat lackluster gpa, does she still have a chance of receiving a bid? I am driving myself crazy worrying over what might go wrong! I would really appreciate your input. Thanks

I can't speak of how things are at U of Oklahoma, but at my chapter, we pay attention to everything about the rushee, not just the GPA. In the past we've extended bids to girls who haven't quite met the required GPA (who've basically been borderline like you are)...but because there was something about them that we liked, we knew that we wanted them to be a part of our organization.

HOWEVER, if we get a large number of girls, then their GPA may be the key in determining who gets invited back and who doesn't.

Good luck at U of O and please keep us posted. I checked out their Panhellenic website and their houses are simply beautiful.

Most chapters are allowed to take one or two "grade risks". I know at University of Kentucky where greek life is huge they even do this. Usually it is a woman that someone bonds with quickly and shows the qualities the sorority wants to a tee. We have taken at least 2 grade risks every formal recruitment. I hate having to cut women because of their grades, but if you have a 2.0 you may want to try working harder on school and getting that taken care before you commit yourself to the time it takes to be in a sorority. That is not directed at you, OKsoonergirl, though, because I graduated high school with a 2.9 and I have never had a semester under a 3.0!

I don't know about all schools, but at the College of Charleston, you need a 2.0 to rush. But after the first round of parties, we cut every girl under a 2.5. After that, we are much less concerned with high school GPA, and spend the rest of rush trying to get to know what kind of girls the rushees are. So I wouldn't stress too much. Just go in there flaunting the stellar personality that I'm sure you have, and you'll probably do just fine!

Don't worry about rush at OU. I am sure that you will do fine with your extracurriculars and everything. I will be rushing this fall at OU also. Keep me posted!

No, they are talking about high school GPAs. We have a very large greek system. I heard yesterday that there were already over 1,000 girls registered!

I had a 2.8 after high school, 2 of the sororities at my school had strict GPA requirements so I was dropped. The other houses that I loved had requirements but they werent as strict. If a house doesnt see past a bad GPA and love you for who you are you dont want to join anyways. Dont worry you will be fine. Good Luck

I only had a 2.5 GPA in high school (I was kind of lazy in math classes LOL), but I'm well-rounded with many activities I've been invloved in. Will this still hurt me? I think it said on a form I filled out that the min. GPA requirement for Rush was 2.0.

I only had a 2.8 in high school, but I recieved two academic scholarships from the school I am attending this fall. It bothers me to think that I can be accepted for scholarships with my unimpressive GPA but I might be cut right away by sororities because of it (and there are only three sororities left at the school I will be attending).
