Any sophomore rushees here?

Has anybody here waited one year (at least) before deciding to go through rush? Were you glad you did so you could have a "not so fake" view of the greek system (face it, rush is fake) or are you sad that you missed out on a year of the greek experience?

Or, to flip things around, does anybody here who rushed as a freshman wish they'd waited a year to get things figured out first?

I rushed as a sophmore (after being extremely anti-Greek my freshman year). On the one hand, it has made me appreciate my sorority and the bond of sisterhood so much more but, on the other hand, I missed out on a year of Greek Life because of my stupidity. I think it's almost a catch 22.

idahovandal-why do you think rush is fake?

It might be better to rush in first year, as some campuses look at your grades.
When you rush as a Freshman, you're starting with a relatively "clean slate".

I wouldn't go so far as to say "Rush is Fake", but the conversation is fairly light, get to know you stuff:
"What's Your Major?"
"What do you like to do?"
"Where did you go to high school?"
"What the reasons that interest you in Greek Life?"

While these may be fairly "surface" questions, remember everyone is meeting everyone else for the first time, and it isn't appropriate to trot out the heavy personal baggage/issues to someone that you've just met for the first time.

Check out Rush and keep an open mind...you'll probably have a lot of fun! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif

I rushed Soph. year after having a not so great academic year Fresh. year and I'm so glad things worked out the way they did. I'm a lot more grounded now I think and I don't think fresh. year I would have been able to handle all the time committments for a sorority and studying, classes, a job etc... it definetly has pros to wait!

I rushed sophomore year - we had deferred rush anyway, but I was pledging APO my 2nd semester freshman year. Because of that I was WAY ahead as far as knowing the Greek alphabet, time commitments for pledging, etc.

I am SO glad I did. I didn't get burned out and I made a lot of non-Greek friends, and knew people when I went through rush, which really helped to know a face or 2 when I walked into the room. Plus I got to see the women in my dorm go through sorority pledging (not to mention little sister pledging, if I had thought of exploring that option) and that also was a help.

DISCLAIMER: If your school has a BIG Greek system where 98% of the rushees are freshmen, don't listen to me! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif

Hi,I'm a sophomore at a smaller public university in South Carolina. I am considering rushing this fall. My school had deferred rush last year, but starting this fall formal rush will be in the fall. I was wondering will it look bad since I joined a professional business fraternity before rushing a social organization??

Thanks

No, it should be an asset since you'll already know Greek alphabet and such.

Hey Idaho Vandal,

I'm from WA and went to school at that other school right across the border from Moscow..haha.. you know what school I am talking about! I am also going to be a soph this year and went through formal rush last year, so let me know if I can give you any insight since they are probably pretty similar.

I waited to rush until my sophmre year and am really glad I did. I knew more people and it was nice walking in and recognizing friends and people I had seen in class or other places. Plus, I knew my was around campus, so that was one less worry during a very stressful week.
