Name one band I've never heard of
 

Tonight, a few of us were talking about MTV's blatant control over the music industry, and the conversation got to bands that we would "make huge" if we had the chance.

In that spirit - Give me one band I've never heard of that you would make huge, and why.

I'll drop some of mine in a second, but I'll start with:

Atmosphere
Midwest hip-hop that is intensely personal and introspective - amazing music in every sense of the word. Genre-destroying lyrics and great beats.

I would have to disagree with the statement of MTV's control of the music industry. The real controllers of the music industry is the big labels such as sony, warner bros, etc. They use their big money to get their artists out and noticed. It's a lot easier for an artist on Interscope to get his video on MTV than an artist on Vagrant Records. But in all good fun, my choice would be....

Saves The Day. What can I say, this band rocks.

OK - well, I was using hyperbole a little - but I know a girl who's interning at MTV for the summer, and let's just say that the "TRL vote totals" were one of her jobs . . . and she didn't read any emails or take any calls.

Hysterical - I'm listening to "Stay What You Are" as I read this.

Springbok Nude Girls. Great band from South Africa. TKZ, a kwaito band from here (Kwaito is SA version of rap).

Yellowcard. I love their song called Drifting.

Reckless Kelly - Country/ Rock band outta Austin Belong to a genre of music now refered to as "Texas Country" Where rock and country meet.

"Lonely all the Time" and "Come on Over" are my favorite songs by them. They rock. Pour it all into their music, and are totally accessable. Windows down driving music. Live shows are amazing.

ALSO -
Cross Canadian Ragweed - Texas Country too.

Download "Boys From Oklahoma" Great song. Amazing artists. How they get the crowd involved withthe shows makes it seem as if they as artists, DO care about how their music us appreciated.

YES, but, do not forget "Red River Valley". An awesome take on a classic.

Something Corporate (although the had one song on mtv a while ago.. )= wonderful lyrics.. piano gives it such a unique emotional twist... their slower songs are so moving... and i dig the lead singer/pianist :)

The Juliana Theory - just listen to them, you'll be hooked! and they are SUPER live!

always a firm supporter of underground rock and garage bands. if youre on vagrant or drive thru, youre good to go by me!

Not only are they all awesome musicians, they're nice people as well. :)

I would have to say Tripmaster Monkey. They were popular in Iowa when I was in college, although they're not around any more. It's not so much the kind of music I'm into now, but as far as early 90s alt-rock with a psychedelic edge goes, they were pretty dope.

If I had to pick a band that is still around, I'd have to go with another Iowa band, out of Cedar Falls: House of Large Sizes. They are one of the best live bands I have ever seen, with a great bass player, a great singer, and catchy, slightly funky, rockin' songs. They opened for Frank Black last year, and it was so great to see them after all these years. They've been around forever and are really dedicated to what they're doing, and so I think they deserve to be a lot bigger than they are.

My friend dated their lead singer...for a brief moment. They are still friends and she totally loved their music.
I must admit, I'm not into live bands and stuff but from what I heard they're pretty good.

The Ernies but you've heard of them.

The Get Up Kids...however if you know Saves the Day, you might know TGUK. The toured with Weezer awhile ago (maybe 2 springs ago).

Eyes Adrift - composed of one of the brothers Kirkwood from the Meat Puppets, Krist Novoselic - bassist from Nirvana, and the drummer from Sublime/Long Beach Dub All Stars...Bud Gaugh is his name.

also from B.G., but not as famous as Nappy Roots, is Dry Land Fish. alternative bluegrass, southern rock.

and a little band from Alabama called Lynyrd Skynyrd. A band that you should hear on any radio/music-tv station that claims to be rock needs to play the roots. i can't believe there are people that don't know the words to Freebird.
