Music at Formals...
After watching the latest SL episode, I noticed that the girls were
dancing to songs like "Love Shack" and "We Are Family". Don't get me wrong, but I'm an old fart from the 80's and rocking out to the B-52's was sort of on it's way out even back then (for Christ's sake they play that stuff at WEDDINGS). So my question is, what music is popular at formals right now? Since I'm so old I have this mental image of modern Greeks rocking out to Slipknot and Limp Bizkit or rave-type music, but that's obviously not what's going on (like I said I'm really old). ;) So, what's hot these days? |
Party songs from the past two formals I've attended included the Lady Marmalade Remake, anything sing-a-long-able to the Dixie Chicks, chick music, I must say. But Shaggy's been really popular recently too.

whatever is popular at the time is what most people listen to at formals... of course "tiny dancer" by elton john is always played, as is "we are family"... but mostly just new songs, the top 40.
|
For some reason Magic Carpet Ride is very popular at our formals...:D
|
Magic Carpet Ride was popular with us too! And definitely "We Are Family" of as we sing it...We are D Phi E. :) Most of the music is basically what is popular at the time, but there are always those cool college songs like Sweet Caroline, The Joker, Brown Eyed Girl, American Pie, etc....or maybe that's just my school :D

Along with the popular rap songs (think Nelly's Ride With Me), we usually have Bon Jovi's Livin on a Prayer and Def Leapord's Pour Some Sugar On Me. I'm a big requester of songs so this past year I always requested Mr. Cheeks' Lights, Camera, Action and Ludacris' Southern Hospitality (love them!)

Music at formal? I dont' remember that.......
OOpps :) |
Our chapter used to always have a joint formal with the Phi Mu Alpha chapter on campus (we're arts, and they're music). The past few years they've held them independently for a variety of reasons.
Either way, there's always been a live band. I know that my senior year we discussed a DJ but ruled it out (we didn't think that was supporting the arts very much). So there's a lot of more jazzy type things, and older rock covers. We had so many members that were students in the conservatory of music that we always got our professor's bands to play pretty inexpensively. Definately made it seem classier than a DJ, I think. |
It's different every year... We pass a list around and people list what they want for the DJ.
One that shows up every damned party is Vanilla Ice.. |
Somehow I don't end up remembering most of the songs they play at formals. But I vaguely remember Nelly "Hot in Herre" at almost every formal. And that infamous formal that I got on stage and requested Snoop Dogg's Aint No Fun...the most chauvenistic degrading song EVER yet every girl knows all the lyrics. There's always a lot of rap and R&B(Ludacriss, Nappy Roots, Ashanti, Ja Rule etc.) and dance remakes of pop songs(Enrique Inglesias, Britney,Shakira). And the classics (Bon Jovi, Cyndi Lauper, Steppenwolf, ACDC, etc.). Anything that makes people move and girls scream, drag their sisters on the dance floor and go "It's our song!"
|
Hank Williams, Jr. classics
Nappy Roots (shout out, Kentucky, whoop whoop) David Allen Coe Lynard Skynard and anything that the girls want to dance to. |
"baby got back" seems to make an appearance at every formal i have been at. lot of hip hop as well.
we also have this thing where if we had greek sing or derby days lip sync that semester, we would have to play the songs we used and do parts of our routine. it's pretty funny when everyone is in formal dresses and drunk. Can't forget "I will survive" and "brown eyed girl" |
At every dance or formal that we have they play "Girls just wanna have fun"
