Yet another resume question....
I'm busy filling out my resume to send in with my RUSH application. My problem is, from everything I've seen on here I should keep my resume to one page, I can't fit everything on one page. The resume is supposed to contain high school/college honors and activities. After I listed everything, my resume was a page and a half. I only elaborated on a few things (certain awards and clubs) that people wouldn't understand unless they went to school with me. Is my resume too long? Should I eliminate some things? I want to stand out with my resume, but I'm afraid since it's so long, the girls will just skim over it. Help please.....

Your resume is definitely too long. Even after you graduate from college and are looking for a job your resume should only be a page. Don't elaborate so much. It will give you something to talk about during rush.

A one page resume for a job, Wine&Blue???
Anyway, we don't use resumes at my school but I would suggest only keeping the activities that you were most actively involved in. I'm sure chapters would be more impressed by say, if you did french club for 2 years vs. doing four activities in the same year but didn't really contribute much to them. That might possibly be a way to shorten your resume. Hope that helps! |
Thanks. The advice is really helping, and it makes me think of more questions actually. On my resume, should I put down that I was an officer in certain clubs and Editor-in Chief of the school newspaper? Or should I just leave those types of things off and just say that I was in such and such club and on the school newspaper staff?
I have already changed some things on the resume and shortened it to one page, so now I just have to revise things. |
Yes Leslie, one page is what I've always heard. At least when interviewing for your first job out of college. I've had two jobs since graduating and I still try to keep it down to one page. It's getting harder and harder to do, and eventually it will have to be more than one page, but for now it's still one.
Greek_Girl, you might also look at the font you are using. I know that 12 point Times New Roman is smaller than 12 point Courier New (a fact which will help you in college when you are trying to stretch a 15 page paper into 20 http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif ). So experiment with that and see if you can't get it onto one page. |

It's better to go into more detail with activities you were really involved with and leave out the ones you weren't a major part of. Those details will REALLY help start conversations, whereas a question from a sister on a club you didn't do much for will stall the conversation quickly http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif They want to see leadership, so show it to them! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

If you have microsoft word use the Resume Wizard to help format it & it gives you ideas of what heading to include ect.
