What to say...what not to say

I find it funny you get all this info about "how to answer questions" what to say at recruitment and what not to say" yet we tell the girls to have an open mind and "be yourself" what a joke! If you are being yourself then no subjects should be off limits. Formal rush is just a big acting session. Just look at the differences between the Rush Photos and the photos on IG of the first alcohol allowed parties. Then you get the true stories...those sweet pledge girls holding cigarette in one hand and a beer in the other. Maybe the questions who smokes, drinks excessively underage and which house are the biggest part houses should be a topic of conversation. Maybe politics, gays, the issues of society should be allowed. I know when I got in I was shocked at how behavior changed. This house was nothing like me morally it had all been an act durning formal rush. Girls would get trashed and hook up with different frat guys each weekend. My big was nothing like me. She was dumb as a rock when it came to any real issues and all she wanted to do was take me to parties and try to force me to get drunk. So if they truly want you to find a home where you fit in then be yourself would mean exactly that...allow them to talk about whatever they normally talk about then you would know if there was a fit. I eventually worked out my issues with my big but it was not fun or easy. I did stay with my top tier house and had good experience but this has always been a pet peeve of mine. If you really want to know the girls ask the hard questions about the "off limits topics" those are the ones that will cause issues later on!

"Be the change you wish to see in the world" comes to mind. I'm willing to bet you perpetuated the system about which you are bitching based on the sentences I bolded.

Nope you would be wrong I spoke up against it many times! I'm now a 52 years old attorney and it is not even worse than before. Both my older daughters were in top houses at Alabama but neither went to my legacy house. My younger daughter decided it wasn't even for her. My husband agrees as we met at a mixer. Guys don't have the sane judgement issues that the women have. They don't pretend like the world is all Rosy durning rush week.

She's an attorney - someone else writes and/or edits her briefs, etc.

Let's assume you're a trial attorney. You counsel clients every day about how to present themselves, how to speak, what to say, what not to say. That is not saying they should lie - just present the best version of themselves for the situation.

I don't think that anyone would say the format for rush is anything but lousy. The process of making friends should be lengthy conversations that develop over time and include the good, the bad and the ugly. Now let's overlay that with 500+ at a LOT of campuses around the US and well over 1000+ in your particular experience. How would you presume to do that? I would imagine you could get that 1000+ girls narrowed down to 100 in, what, 4 years? That seems pretty realistic to me. so voila. No Greek system.

The other alternative is a random assignment of all the girls into the various chapters. In reality it probably wouldn't greatly affect the feeling of any of those chapters. But we are secret societies with private membership selection. Taking the choice of the membership out of their hands would not go over well.

So what is your alternative?

Politely and respectfully disagree. My attorney friends do all their own writing; their communication skills and reasoning skills are stellar. That's not what is evidenced here by the OP. Not by a long shot.

I've got popcorn and soda at hand. We're overdue.

Yes we are, and I agree with AZTheta. Suspicious.
