Question about a term

I have seen the term "GDI" used in many posts throughout Greek Chat, usually in a negative context. What does "GDI" mean? I am new to this so I hope I don't seem dim by not knowing the meaning. Thanks!

usually stands for Gosh-darn Independent... or something else that is usually abbreviated with GD -- if you get my meaning. ;) The term GDI refers normally to one of two types of people: 1) a person who is strongly anti-Greek or 2) a person who is a non-Greek and, although not "anti-Greek," has no personal desire to join a fraternity or sorority.

At my school it's like dzrose said, but there is also the people that were so incredibly pro-greek, rushed (and were usually REALLY rude to house members), and then all of a sudden hated all greeks because they were shot down by an org. You know the type... the people who thought they were hot shots and could make it in a certain org and blabed to all their friends that they were DEFINATELY going to be XYZ, and it somehow got back to the members and they were dropped. Such people never cease to amaze me...

On my campus it is entirley different. GDI's are considered those who wanted nothing to do with greek life. Not necesserily against it, but just felt that they didn't want to belong to an organization. They are content with being their independent self.

Everybody's definition of GDI can be quite different, it's all a matter of where you go to school.

I use the term GDI (which, btw, I never heard before finding GreekChat) to refer to anyone who, for whatever reason, chose not to become part of the greek system. It's not necessarily derogatory... I even refer to my husband as a GDI... he's not anti-greek, but joining a fraternity was not right for him.
