Book on College Life

Is it okay if I post a shameless plug for my new book? I wrote a book called "Student Body Shots: A Sarcastic Look at the Best 4-6 Years of Your Life" that comes out this week, and I figured I'd post the page I wrote on Greek Life. (There are plenty of other mentions of it throughout the book, but this was the Greek life section). If anyone is interested in reading more excerpts or maybe even buying a copy, check out to:

GREEK LIFE (p.37)

I don’t understand why people don’t rush. I mean, if there’s one thing I hate, it’s getting free stuff while meeting people.

Do you have a friend who looks for Greek letters in movies, just so he can try to identify the fraternity? This is the same guy who calls 867-5309 and gets pissed when Jenny doesn’t answer.

Someone was trying to explain to me why rushing was a bad idea. Now this would be fine if I were thinking of rushing, but I’m running rush. Think about what you’re saying. “I think anyone who buys a Dave Matthews CD is an idiot. By the way, Mr. Matthews, how are you?”

Sorority rush and Fraternity rush are completely different. Sorority rush involves visits to all the houses, and bid lists, and preferences, and complex rules about who you can and can’t talk to and for how long. Fraternity rush involves nachos and college football.

Some sororities send clear messages during rush. They say, “we value you for who you are, we don’t want to change you, we value your individuality, and we are all unique.” And they say it with their fifty sisters all dressed in black pants, black sandals, and white baby tees.

It’s weird when everyone in a sorority dresses the same during rush as a symbol of unity. Unless they’re wearing bikinis. Then it’s pretty cool.

In most schools, if you’re in a fraternity, you meet twice as many people as you would otherwise. I told that to someone once and they said, “yeah, but they’re all Greeks.” Yeah, jerk, so am I.

Schools hold Greek organizations to a higher standard than other clubs when it comes to alcohol. If someone in a fraternity drinks themselves sick, every one of their brothers gets punished, even if it happened half way across the world. Is it like this in any other campus organization? “A young man was rushed to the hospital after consuming five times the legal limit of alcohol. In response, the University has suspended the charter of his a cappella group, shut down the sixth floor of the freshman dorm, and barred anyone from becoming a bio major again.”

This sounds a lot like Aaron Karo's Ruminations on College Life which is HILARIOUS. I was on the mailing list throughout my college career, and each installment never failed to crack me up. He made the e-mails into a book, and I'm pretty sure you can order it on his webpage www.aaronkaro.com

Can't guarantee it will be the same stuff, but he was Greek (a ZBT at UPenn) and he is pure hilarity.

Shoot, if I had read closer I would have seen that you were plugging YOUR OWN book. I'm sorry - check out Steve's book too!

Hey, thanks for all the nice comments. Texas, the book is available from the publisher right now at http://www.trafford.com/robots/02-0565.html (click on the "enter the bookstore" button). It should be available at Barnes and Nobles soon. (And I'm also doing a college tour).

Just for the record, I'm a proud SigEp (Columbia - New York Phi)
