Voting Structure?
 

I saw a situation develop on another campus (not my own). The school requires all fraternities to belong to the IFC, and there happen to be more small fraternities than large ones. The conflict was sparked by dues. Each fraternity has one vote, regardless of size. However, IFC dues are assessed based on the size of membership. The large fraternities say, "We are required to join, so we are going to insist on one-man, one-vote. If the TKEs have 100 members and the Betas have ten, then the TKE delegate's vote counts 100 points to the Beta delegate's ten."
I see their point. Anyone else have an opinion?

No, that would suck. You might as well say that the bigger fraternities are the only important ones and the smaller ones have no say in the matter.

Are the dues assessed at, for example, $1 per member? In our alumnae panhel, you pay one fee if your alum chapter is 10 members or under and a higher fee if you have more than 10 members. That might be a better solution.

That makes sense.
 

I think the thing that had them up in arms was the "per man" charge. You're right: two prices; one for large and a lower rate for the smaller houses seems reasonable. Their situation ended badly. They should have had you to advise them!

If the smaller groups can come up with the whopping $13 per then why cant you? Maybe you should sell one of your fire trucks.

Everyone has the same fee so whats not fair?

Each fraternity, large or small, should have the same valued vote. As for dues in IFC, it's assessed at a x dollar amount per member.

Everyone on my campus pays $2 per active member and each organization gets to cast one vote.

Its an argument made by people that are pissed about having to join IFC. It is done to deliberately stall the process and cause problems.

That being said . . they don't have to join the IFC, but they lose benefits if all the other fraternities do . . because if they can get the sororities to agree they can limit the non-member's social calendar.

Good luck getting the sororities to agree to that! Especially with a popular group.

But no its really not a legitimate argument . . . membership assessment is not being done unfairly. Every chapter can be any size so its not a limited thing . . .

Why do you find their argument so compelling? Does that mean every fraternity should have its voting power changed every semester?

And for that to be legitimate representation then all the members that want to vote need to be at the relevant meetings . . and would be subject to rules of attendance and good standing.

Also the IFC could counter and say they that will be responsive to membership issues: You get one rep for every 250 members . . . seriously the person arguning for the IFC must have been a moron.
