What do you look for in a member?
I was wondering what the fraternities look for in their new members. I hear all the stories about how you cant get in one unless your family is rich and all that but I was wondering what you all really look for.

In order of importance:
1. Grades 2. Activities and Leadership ability 3. Personality 4. Financial ability (most groups have payment programs available, making fraternities affordable for most anyone). Barbara |
If you can't get a bid from a fraternity because you're family is not rich, then do you really want to be in that fraternity? I wouldn't want to if they choose men based on that reason.
I'm in the Delta Upsilon fraternity at Miami University, and our whole basis for choosing who to bid is Quality. If you feel comfortable around all of us, if we enjoyed talking with you and visiting with you during Rush, and if you come off as someone that can help our chapter rather than be a detriment to it, we give you a bid. Just be yourself and you will find the best place for you. ------------------ Brian Sejas VP-Public Relations The Miami Chapter of Delta Upsilon http://www.mudeltau.org |
When I'm voting on a prospective member, I rely on basic personality and likability. Yeah, grades and financial are important but if I don't see myself able to call this girl up and ask her to go out somewhere with me then why would I want her as a sister?

I'm assuming you go to UT Knoxville. There are a couple of fraternities here that are known for only taking legacies, or have a "rich boy" reputation since their dues are so outrageous, but we have such a big greek system that there is a house for almost everyone out there. You just have to go with your gut feeling. I don't know how informed you are about fraternity rush, but if you're still unaffiliated and considering going through fall formal rush, feel free to email me with any questions or concerns. I'd be happy to help out a fellow Vol! Just be thankful that fraternity rush is nothing like panhellenic "recruitment." hahaha

Ah fellow chatters you have done it again! Given very good advice to a newbie! Remember that is what this site is reall for is to get some straight advice. I always looked at a rushee as someone who could help make My Fraternity Grow and Prosper so other young men could enjoy the same good times and fellowship that I had!
I as a Greek am looking for: personallity, grades, leadership, and involvement in my Fraternity. We as Greeks need to keep growing as we are the ones who do more for the Colleges in many ways and even after Graduating. If my House was not there, why do I want to go back? Yes I am loyal to my school as they are strong in FOOTBALL in their leauge but I go back to see MY Brothers! ------------------ Tom Earp LX Z#1 Pittsburg State U. (Kansas) |
