Sorority Rush at Ole Miss.
Hi, my daughter is a Ole Miss sophomore and sorority member. She is very happy and got her first choice.
I'd just like to make a observation about the process and what young ladies may not be aware of. If you look at the numbers Rush is almost like Russian Roulette. One shot in six that you may end up hitting your target House . There are less slots than candidates and this is exacerbated by the deep family tradition and connection to OLE MISS., which results in many legacy candidates for the older houses. Just something to think about. So many fine young ladies , with great backgrounds may be disappointed by the very competitive nature of the rush process. A sorority will add so much to your college experience but be aware of numeric reality. |

PNMs and anxious Moms everywhere, THIS IS NOT TRUE!
Theoretically, every girl going through recruitment could receive a bid at Ole Miss. Of course, some may drop out, some may receive no invitations due to grades, personality or general sluttiness, but quota is set to MAXIMIZE not minimize placement and frankly, the placement rates at the famously competitive SEC recruitments are quite high. |
General sluttiness, haha. :D

Now 200 girls might have begun rush. Some might be dropped for low GPAs. Some may be dropped because they do not have recommendations, ( on many, but not all campuses), some might be dropped because of reputation. In that same vein, some PNMs might CHOOSE to drop out. They decide that sororities are not their cup of tea, they can't afford it, but most often because they don't like the choices they are left with. So moms and PNMs, please don't lose too much sleep over what the OP posted. He has not participated in sorority recruitment and his DD has not participated on the sorority side yet. |
I guess folks want to parse my comments. I never said they would not get a bid.
I suggested that they may not get the targeted sorority. I stated that legacy rushees are a big part of OLE MISS tradition and Greek Life and therefore are part of the competitiveness of the process. It is reality . The whole process can be crushing to egos. Accepting rejection is part of life and they move on. Help me what is a OP ? |

Or you will feel the AZTheta smackdown (as an Ole Miss alumna calls it). Thank you. |

And OP is Original Poster. Now let me bless your heart and send you on your way. |
I'll give the OP the benefit of the doubt that what he meant is there are fewer spaces than rushees in any given chapter and that is critical to remain open minded. This is absolutely true. But your very specific words matter. And if it seems like a bunch of old broads just lost their minds it's because we've been battling this particular nugget of misinformation ever since RFM was instated about, what, 10 years ago?
Virtually every girl who sticks with the program will find a home. But she does have to be willing to accept a sorority other than her initial favorites. |
Like my Daddy used to tell me: I only know what you say, not what you mean to say.

That does happen a lot and not just at Ole Miss. |

Who knows what the OP meant? It's too much work to try to figure out what's in someone's head. Personally, I refuse to speculate. Mainly concerned with the misinformation he was promulgating, for starters.
Like I said, I would have loved to respond to his first post line by line. Maybe I should have, and next time I will. |
Thank you for mansplaining everything to us. As sorority women, we had no idea how these things work.
PNMs and parents, please don't listen to a single word this fool says. He has no idea what he's talking about. |
