I'm a sad little

My big has ignored me all week. I've been super excited for all the srattiness since before I even got a bid. My roommate is in my sorority as well, and she has been given the most meaningful, sweet, thoughtful things. It's not even the stuff, it's just the fact that her big is thinking about her. I would love even a handwritten note, but nope. Nothing. No word. I've been having a lot of problems with depression lately and I thought that this week would help. I've cried myself to sleep every night this week and I feel like shit.

Is it a typical week or the week leading up to initiation?

Titchou 04-07-2016 06:32 AM

Maybe she's had a bad week, too....have you searched her out?

"Srattiness", ugh.

Have you had a good relationship with your big up until now? If so, don't put somuch emphasis on one week. Life happens sometimes, nobody's perfect.

If she's been a crappy big all through pledging, I don't know why you think she would do a 180 this week. Not everyone has the perfect big/little relationship. Just resolve to treat your little better than you were treated and move on and make other friends in your sorority.

If you are struggling with depression, find the counseling services available on your campus and use them. Your sorority is a great "family away from home", but your big sis, new member educator, etc. are not therapists.

If you are comfortable in your own skin, you'll be better equipped to deal with the bumps in the road like big sis envy.

Reach out to her and say, "hey, let's do something special this week! I would love to take you for ____________or go to_________together". See what she says. The relationship cuts both ways. You give, she gives. If it doesn't work, tell yourself you will be a wonderful big to your own little and move on. Most Big/Little relationships are more average than magical.

What BraveMaroon said x100.

Having a great big sis should be icing on the cake, so to speak. Having a nonexistent one shouldn't induce crying. Likewise, a great sorority experience can be a really wonderful thing in your college life, but it cannot - and should not - be the reason for your happiness.

It is a natural, common thing to deal with overwhelming emotions at the beginning of your college career, and many women deal with depression at some point in their lives. Please seek some counseling at your school. Your happiness and resilience needs to come from within, not without.

Good luck, sweetie.
