We had community service events such as visiting a nursing home, hospital and a children's group home. We had alcohol awareness and eating disorder programs on campus. Each semester we had one big philanthropic event such as a scavanger hunt and fashion show to raise money for cystic fibrosis.

Thanks Tom:) I am curious to see what some of you have planned for this upcoming school year.

We do a variety of service events. We have an on-going in which we are all required to participate in and that's tutoring ESL students at the local Elem/Jr. High. We also do beach clean ups, and serve on planning committees and present workshops for certain events such as: Diversity Conference, High School Conference and Co-Sponsor Latino Week. This year we will be sponsoring our first Women's Conference!

We do several philanthropic events and community service as well. Gamma Phi Beta's international philanthropy is camping for underprivilaged girls. Our chapter has adopted a local girls camp for which we raise money, donate gifts, and offer our services with the upkeep of the grounds. Locally, we also support the Special Olympics, the Ronald McDonald House, Operation Smile, local animal shelters and food banks, and we help our alumnae chapter with their Adopt-a-Spot.

Any events that people have participated in lately?

This coming weekend we are sponsoring a surf competition in Virginia Beach to raise money for orphan helpers in Latin America.

update

Just as an update for you Thrillhouse....

Our surf competition yesterday was a success. We had about 15 guys come out and surf, and we raised $759.68 for the Orphan Helpers of Latin America. We also lost a surfer for a little while  but it turns out that he had gone to rescue some kid that had gone out to far and they ended up in the inlet and had to walk back...the police and ambulance were there and they were about to send out a helicopter when the guy came walking up with the kid. So all in all, it was a successful event.

Camping for underprivileged girls... that's a really cool philanthropy! I had never really heard GPhiB's nat. philanthropy because I don't have them on my campus.

Sounds like your surf event was a definite success... congrats!

We're a brand new chapter and still trying to find our 'official' charity. We do things with different groups right now but there's not one that we've really become close to just yet.

Alpha Chi Omega has two philanthropies that we support. Nationally, we support the Alpha Chi Omega Foundation and locally we support Safe Harbor of Greenville, SC. Safe Harbor is a shelter for women and children of domestic violence. This home is in an undisclosed place, so the abusers cannot find these women and children. Safe Harbor provides many services like:
~ 24-hour emergency shelter and crisis line for victims
~ Counseling services
~ Food, lodging, clothing, personal items, and other necessities
~ Legal advocacy and after-care
~ Community support groups
~ 24-hour Emergency Room On-Call Program
~ Speakers for businesses, community, church, civic groups and professionals
We have volunteered time at Safe Harbor cleaning the yard and organizing the storage garage. We also brought The Megan Project to Clemson last October, as a part of Victims of Domestic Violence Awareness month.
During our fall philanthropy event, the fraternities and sororities on campus compete against each other in our "Shakin’ it Down to Raise the Roof" Dance Competition in dance, step, and skit categories. The fraternities [usually] make their pledges do stupid/fiunny skits for this, but the girls bust their butts to do cheer-style AWESOME dances.
This past Spring ('02 ) we sponsored our first ever "Busted" Paintball Tournament on the intramural fields. With bales of hay, a DJ, pizza, and jugs of sweet tea... this event was a huge succes. Our previous spring philanthropy event was a VolleyBall tournament, which was pretty fun... but we decided we needed to switch it up a bit.
This years dance competition is scheduled for 2 weeks from now, i think. Wish us luck!!!! :p
