Let's Pretend

That you are in XYZ and you see what looks to be emotional abuse to pledges occurring in ABC sorority-- do you A)report this to panhellenic and risk being a tattletale or B) or do nothing?
I know a lot of us know that certain houses on our campuses haze, but do we really do anything about it? Or just talk about it amongst ourselves saying it's wrong, but do nothing to stop it?

Little E 08-06-2002 01:30 AM

I think that all depends on what your greek system is like. All three frats have definate rush infractions, (alcohol...lots of it) and the local hazes like no other. They don't have anyone but the school to answer to and just don't think anything is gonna happen.
It might ruin your house's rep on campus if you say anything, and on my campus that is a big risk. So nothing is said, the admin looks the other way and we are just waiting for a lawsuit. But if you say something you could help someone. Think about those men/women that are possibly being hurt. And the integrity of the whole system.
It is a big risk, unless you trust the admin or greek advisor enough to keep you annonymous (sp?). I don't know if i would say anything the risks are great. Our advisor just says eventually they'll get what they have coming, and PNM's will hopefully see the virtue in a haze free experience.
I guess we don't say anything.
Who wants to tattle...?

Part of me wants to say that it's our responsibility as members of the Greek community to flag hazing and other infractions when they happen, that we ought to have the wherewithal to deal with these problems directly and to expect other groups to do the same.

Unfortunately, life is not so simple, but I think that accountability to ourselves and to each other should be our goal.

As a practical matter, I would say this: if you don't feel that you can report it, you should at least try to find ways to discuss it within your own organization and do what you can to improve your own organization.

chideltjen 08-06-2002 03:01 AM

in our greek system... lots of rumors fly. and even tho we have friends in national sororities, we wouldn't be the first to report any hazing. The argument could turn to something we did 3 years ago. And such would be pointless. So as locals, we can gab about it all we want, but we won't say anything if another soror says something. I would hope girls would manage the strength to report something happening to them. Unfortunately it isn't the case.

Eirene_DGP 08-06-2002 06:32 AM

Well I would make sure the org. in question is "hazing" before I did any thing drastic like tell on them. Sometimes what we see and what is going on can become a big blur. I know at our school if anyone reports that an org. is hazing, that org. is placed on automatic suspension until the org in question can be investigated. It would be awful to be wrong and be the cause of this org's. suspension.

AOX81 08-06-2002 09:13 AM

If I knew it was going on I would approach the President of the organization involved. We have such a small Greek community at our school and we don't want to see anyone booted off campus. We try to work problems out amongst ourselves before taking anything to the next level.

shadokat 08-06-2002 09:43 AM

Like AOX, I'd say something to their president or another member of their organization and voice my concerns.

On some campuses I've worked with, the sororities will contact Greek Life anonymously and tell on each other, even with stories that aren't true. Others do it via email. Sometimes, it can just become a vindictive cycle of "telling" on each other, which really makes it hard to know what's true and what's not. On one campus, I had to do a hazing investigation due to these anonymous emails that kept coming in to the Greek Advisor, and ended up NOTHING was going on! At least not with my chapter. Another chapter there got caught hazing by their national and was booted immediately.

Way of handling a org. hazing

If I saw a org. hazing I'd let em' know, and that's it. Sooner or later they'll be caught. I would never snitch em' out to school or their national. As Greeks we have to back each other up.

DeltAlum 08-08-2002 02:49 AM

Just for the heck of it, let's consider this.

If you do and/or say nothing, aren't you condoning and letting an illegal action continue?

Hazing isn't legal.

Right?

violets 08-08-2002 03:59 PM

I agree with Deltalum, hazing in any form is an illegal activity, simple as that. If you saw members of the same organization stealing from the campus book store would you let the management know? Of courseyou would.
I would suggest a meeting with your Chapter Advisor, President and Panhellenic rep to work out the best way to approach this problem.

I wouldnt't say anything unlsess someone's life is in danger.

If you tattle the other glo will just deny it. Then what? You might as well paint a big bullseye on yourself and your chapter.
The other glo will make it their mission to catch your chapter breaking a rule.

Assuming they're still around and in a position to do something to you. Remember the illegal part? And assuming your chapter doesn't haze and break rules -- which I'm sure you don't.

Right?

Peaches-n-Cream 08-09-2002 05:12 PM

I know someone who was hazed by a sorority as a pledge. She told them that she was not interested in being in a sorority where people were mean to her and quit. More pledges should be like this.

That's what I was trying to express in a different thread. Every greek organization is going be after you if you try to report it. Get evidence of such activities, then they can't do a thing.

What Delta Alum and Cream said is so true!

While we as LXA did not condone Hazing We were the first Greek Fraternity to put this out to the Public and our members!

If I caught any of my Brothers doing the Hazing thing, I would be all over them in a loud and nasty voice! Stink on S&^T comes to mind!

Because it was Done Dont mean it still needs to be done!

I never knew that you could Beat Brotherhood into someone!

To many of our Associates or Pledges have died from this, what the hell good does it do? Cause Problems for the Rest Of Greek Dom!
