Questions for Sigma AEPi and UCD Greeks re: Sorority Life
Several folks at UC Davis have offered to answer questions about the Sorority Life show, Sigma AEPi, and the greek system at UC Davis. I'm starting this thread as a (civil!) place where such questions can be asked, and hopefully answered by people in the know. I'm sure MTV is only showing about 1% of what actually went on during this past spring.
I'll start things off..... We've seen a lot of "questionable" behavior on the part of some of the new members - for example, 4 of the new members drinking alcohol in the house, Candace shirking her sober sister duties, Sylvia slapping Jessica, etc. Were these people reprimanded at the time? If they weren't caught at the time, were they reprimanded once their violation of the rules was shown on MTV? Exactly how much choice did the new members have as to whether to participate in NM activities such as the rocks-moving or the NM retreat? Did they get points for participating, lose points for not participating, was it just a fun activity, or what? (Some GC'ers have called these things hazing, hence the question.) We've seen the "all pledges living in the house except Jessica are in trouble" meeting. Were any of them, besides Jordan, spoken to in advance about their questionable behavior, or were the point deductions a surprise? In light of the events seen on the show, has Sigma AEPi considered setting up a standards board? How did the filming affect other GLO's on the UC Davis campus? |

I can't really tell you what Sigma did to reprimand the girls, or if they knew anything. I think the only girls that know, are actually in the house. They've been fairly secretive about things, and didn't want to influence the girl's actions. You also have to realize that is MTV!! I worked for MTV, and let me tell you, they make a mountain out of a mole hill...editing can change everything when you take things out of context, and line things up in the manner that you want them to seem. You have to realize that Davis is a great school, with high academic standards, known for it's engineering, agriculture and medical departments, so you can guess how a campus would be, NOT Girls Gone Wild or craziness! Even though MTV would like us to think it's all drama and craziness, it is SOOO Not. So, I think it's a hoot, how they are trying to make this little chapter into such a drama-case. My other advisors don't think it's funny, because it sheds a bad light on the sorority, but I have to take it in stride and just laugh. We all know how it is, and we know it's not like what's shown on MTV!!
As for the affect on the houses, I havent' seen it affect our girls, we just tell them to not wear letters when around the Sigmas and to be respectful, and everything will be peachy-keen! Just watch the show, and have fun, don't orver analyze things, because you KNOW tv is never real! |
We might get more answers on this after all the episodes of the show have aired. I bet that right now the Sigma girls have taken an MTV-enforced ban of silence. They probably signed a contract that said that they wouldn't discuss the show or the outcome of the pledge class/season before the episodes had all aired. I think the one Sigma we do have on the board is an alum, so I'm not sure how much she'll know about the goings-on in the chapter, or how much she could tell us even if she does.

ok call me a GC newbie but what the hell does "bump" mean on a post? I know it's off topic but it's bothering me. :)

"bump" means that you post to bump the thread up to the top of the forum b/c the threads are listed by date of last post.
