That's not right. . .

Sorhors,

I must say that after reading Ebony's magazine for July 2002 and checking out their calendar events the Blue-ti-ful Ladies of Sigma Gamma Rho have a serious bone to pick with them about their lack of respect and willingness to include the many wonderful things that Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. does on a daily, monthly, and yearly basis. Moreover, if you really check out all of the articles they present about the membership of the divine 9 you will notice how little information they actually give to us, Zeta Phi Beta, Phi Beta Sigma and Iota Phi Theta and that's not right. This has been going on since that magazine was organized. . .

When African American magazines, vendors, and websites constantly exclude the work that we do for the community I say that it's time for us to not take that lack of respect sitting down. I know that on many occassions I have written letters and now I'm at the point where I no longer purchase magazines or even stop by vendors' tables that are disrespectful to my beloved sorority. What I am doing is being proactive and speaking out and letting those ignorant people know that no matter how hard they try to overlook, exclude, or ignore Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. that is when we become stronger and the more we will continue to strive for "Greater Service, Greater Progress."

I'm still a little mad but I feel much better in getting that off my chest! Yes, there still is a double standard within the African American Greek system and folks the only way to put a stop to this unfair behavior is to speak up and speak out.

I agree 1922%!! Soror, I want to send you a PM...

NP.

You're right!

I no longer read Ebony and haven't in many years so I have not seen the July 2002 edition. But you are absolutely right--if they are going to mention any of the Divine Nine than it should be all of them and with the same amount of coverage.

Sigma Tweety 08-05-2002 04:52 PM

Right on, Soror!

BlueReign 08-06-2002 01:47 PM

Yes, let's do tell it like it is Soror! No sense in complaining without action though. Only when we speak up is when we will be heard! Can we decide from now on to be more proactive rather than reactive? Sorors are you with me?

SeriousSigma22 08-06-2002 03:57 PM

Sorhor Bluereign,

I am with you and I no longer read or will purchase magazines or nalia from vendors that don't show Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. respect. I did send them a letter to their editorial section let us see if they are going to respond.

Sorhor Rhoyalty 22,

Thanks for providing that bit of information, however, in the past Ebony always just seems to never get our input on any of their stories. For example, what about the story about Euroamericans pledging African American fraternities and sororities (issue from 2000). They even had photos and interviews from members that pledged certain bglos from Longwood University in Farmville, Va and they didn't even stop to get an interview from the members of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. and I know for a fact that Omicron Omicron chapter has several Asian sorhors and Caucasian sorhors where was their input? I know that I sound petty but this crap has been going on for years just check out their past articles and issues they might mention our name or say that the last sorority was founded in 1922 but they really don't give us the same quality publicity as some of the others. I can't blame the other greeks because that's not their fault but what I can do is - no longer give them my financial support because they are seriously biased.

bluethunder 08-13-2002 12:51 PM

but you know what really makes me mad?!
when after conveniently skipping over certain organizations and after members of the ommitted fraternity or sorority take and stand and speak up about being the situation... it absolutely makes my blood boil when people have the NERVE to say "get over it" and dismiss the situation as people needing to get over themselves... knowing FULL WELL that if the same thing was done to THEIR organization, they'd be ready to BOYCOTT and HOLD PRESS CONFERENCES!
just had to get that off my chest, sorors!

SeriousSigma22 08-13-2002 01:02 PM

Sorhor Bluethunder,

You are so very right sorhor! And to folks that would have the nerve to say get over it! I say-- Let's test out their theory and the next big event that is advertised we will just exclude your organization and see how quietly they sit by without taking a stand. They know that deep down they would be the first ones to get with the newspaper, magazine, television station, etc.

1922%? dang, that's a whole lot.

starang21 08-13-2002 06:46 PM

"you will notice how little information they actually give to us, Zeta Phi Beta, Phi Beta Sigma and Iota Phi Theta"

yeah, but you have to realize, that the these 4 organizations are also the most hated on. so in hindsight, that article can kiss my ***.

SeriousSigma22 08-16-2002 04:24 PM

Starang21,

Yes, you are so very right but the time for our organizations to act is now! How dare these African American publications continue to exclude our organizations with their rich history. We all, members of the divine 9, have played and continue to play a significant role in American American communities and American society as a whole.

You're so right!

"with their rich history"

Our History is why I chose Sigma. It is a rich history that I am extremely proud of!

NinjaPoodle 10-03-2005 02:36 PM

It's been a few years since this article and this thread were written. How do Sorors and others (PBS, IPT etc..) feel about coverage in the magazine? (other D-9's too)

I disagree. Ebony and other news organizations report on what they know about and find to be newsworthy. Unless one can show where there is a blatant disregard for newsworthy events put on by SGRho, and the other organizations mentioned, it just sounds like sour grapes. I think that putting yourself in the position for people to want to know more about your organization would go a lot further than crying foul on a play that possibly doesn't even exist.
