Canada where were you...

A month or so ago I went on a semi-road trip to my friend's cabin in Grand Bend, Canada. We were passing through Indian territory, and on a lot of the shacks it said a bunch of comments. One in particular had me thinking about what it meant, since I don't know much about Canada's history, and don't remember any American history (if this was a part of it). It said "Canada, where were you in 1812?" Can someone please explain?

The War of 1812 is the only thing that comes to mind. I'm an American so I'm not the right person to answer this question. No one had responded so I decided to take a stab at it.

I'm Canadian and have no clue what that means - I have never heard about that sign before - it may have something to do with the ongoing political and cultural struggle between the Canadian government and the First Nations, but that's just a far out guess, maybe someone from Back East might be able to answer that question.
