Tips For American Tourists In Canada
This is not a thread to offend or to say that i hate Americans or anything but its a thread that i think Americans that are comming to Canada to visit should read..and Canadians will find funny..You may add to this list. This does not apply to everyone but i must say it does to most Americans that visit Canada.
I do not want hate mail please! Tips for American Tourist to Canada. Because i work at a resort and ihave noticed these a lot. As a said these have applied to not all Americans. So it doesnt mean you it just means do not act this way because a lot of Americans do. 1. It is not neccessary to wear the American flag on every peice of clothing that you wear..or wear Tommy Hilfiger every day. I know you love your country but you dont have to wear a USA shirt EVERY DAY AND EVERY WHERE YOU GO. 2. Just because you are an American it doesnt mean you have ANY special status in Canada. yes you are an American, No you do not have to tell me every 5 mins and NO you are not going to be waited on hand and foot at every second even if you yell: I AM AN AMERICAN!! 3. Not everywhere carries American Express. I know they do in the USA but not In Canada its Visa most likely. Dont yell at me if we only accept Visa. 4. PLEASE exchange your money BEFORE YOU COME because its not by law that resorts or any other places other than the bank have to give the exchange rate. WE DO NOT GIVE EXCHANGE RATE ON PENNIES. Just because its American Money doesnt mean it gets the exchange rate. 5. Please do not throw my currency in my face and yell at me to configure out this CRAZY CANUCK MONEY! No offence but our change is very EASY to figure out. It looks EXACTLY identical to yours! WOW! 6. Do not expect every place to carry Budwiser Beer. We like to drink good beer-*that was a cheap shot and just a joke!* When you order a beer it is not-CanadianBlueBluelite its Canadian OR BLue. Do not constantly compare our beer to yours. 7. We do not say EH at the end of every sentence so dont expect us to. 8. You do not have to talk to Canadians like they are 5 years old..or call us Baby U.S or think we live in Igloos. 9. Dont look so amazed that we have highways and hydro..ooh and do not ask: Do you know where Ohio is? Because we do know where things are in the world. 10. We do not live in Cottages all of the time. Dont complain that Canada is not "rustic" enough and then use the resort vacum every single day-okay that is a direct shot to a particular American. 11. No we do not have 3-5 Walmarts in every town. Especially Peterborough we only have ONE and we do not have SUPER Walmarts. You dont have to tell me that in America that you have 3 Walmarts in a town that is smaller than ours. 12. Not every city has a mountie. They are in Ottawa and only dress up in uniform for SPECIAL events. Ottawa is 3 hours drive away from Peterborough and Nova Scotia and Vancouver are on opposite sides of the country not just down the road. You dont have to yell at me because my country is too big. So is yours!! 13. PLEASE do not litter or disrespect our natural environment..learn how to drive a boat, throw trash in the trashcans etc. This is not your backyard this is someones country. 14. Just because you are American it still means you have to pay for parking. Do NOT CALL MY COUNTRY A WELFARE STATE THAT YOU HAVE TO SUPPORT. WE SUPPORT OURSELVES! This is not a hate message for Americans. No really there are really great ones out but every American tourist that i have had at my resort and friends deal with American tourist have applied to these situations. I thought i should this poitn this out. Do not take it personally unless it applies to you. Please dont hate me! Oh and feel free to add to the list! |
Wouldn't that apply to mostly EVERY OTHER country (especially France)?
|
I'm not really certain what the point of this thread is. At first, I thought that it was supposed to be funny, but then I read it. Maybe it will be funny to Canadians.
|
We're not all like that!
And I'll be in Toronto in a few days... Looking forward to it! |
To add another note:
it is kinda funny because you have to laugh at people who are so like this..and its funny if you've had this situations. I know this can apply to every country but i thought that i would post this because we are mostly North Americans here. Not the mostly not JUSt. Oh and i KNOW that not all Americans are like this. I appreciate nice ones. Its just that all of my friends in the tourist industry got some of these incidences and a lot are from my own personal experiance. Its not meant to be hatred but just a vent and a note for people to see outside of their country and not just to expect the world to revolve around them. Thank you very much. |
Out of respect for our fine neighbors to the north who brought us CutiePie2000, Kids in the Hall and the Hockey News, I'm not going to say anything other than any American who has ever worked in the service industry in a vacation area that attracts foreign visitors could no doubt compile a list that reads eerily like this one.
'Nuf said :) Love, Tracy the Tommy Hilfiger-sporting Yank ;) |
No worries... anyone who's travelled with other Americans has probably seen it first hand. I know I have.

Hi Tracy, Thanks for the kind compliment. I used to work for a cruise ship company so I have had my fair share of tourist stories and people behaving ugly. I guess in general, I would love to see tourists of ANY country to make a bit more of an effort to be informed about the country that they are visiting and not expect it to be "like it is back home". As the saying goes.... "If you want things to be just like back home, STAY HOME!". :) |
As Lewis Grizzard said, "Delta's ready when you are!"

And for all the foreigners visiting the US.
Please, please, please. If your child doesn't speak a word of English, do NOT leave them alone. Especially in a museum where volunteers are trying to teach your little brats about horseshoe crabs!!! k, I need to breathe and just let that go. it's only been 9 years. :o (This one especially applies to the French Canadians!) Please do not bitch that our money is hard to figure out because it's all the same color. THERE ARE BIG FREAKIN NUMBERS ON EACH BILL, ON BOTH SIDES!!!  To one Canadian family in particular. Do not tell me we should have Doozys, or whatever the hell you called it. The US does in fact have $2 bills. I would bet less than 1% of the population likes them. And they just pretty much collect them. And yes, we have dollar coins. They're treated just like the $2 bills! |

I had a Russian fella get all huffy on me once when my French was not quite up to his standards. He was shopping in a Radioshack in Oklahoma City for God's sake...
Either learn the language or deal with the fact that you don't know it. |
I think most of these are pretty funny, because I'm sitting here picturing people acting like this. And we all know there are people like this EVERYWHERE!! Although it's not as funny when you're the one who has to deal with them. :p

I'm going to Toronto on Saturday and I admit, I have been thinking about Canada as foreign because, essentially you are, but I don't want to make any social faux pas against your culture, so I actually do appreciate this thread. I am a bit nervous about the money, but I found some websites that show me the money, so I'm less worried now. Although I do have one question: I am getting 50% of people telling me to exchange my money there, some say here. What is best, honestly??
