Question about technical NPC details?
 

Me and a couple girls from my chapter of an NPC sorority have been talking about the chapter as a whole lately, and we have been struggling a little bit. Our pledge class kind of turned around the chapter (I'm not saying that in a good or bad way; things were just very different before we got there and we have a very different mentality than all of the older sisters). We were joking around about how nice it would be to just separate and start our own sorority...and it's sounding better and better every day. I know this can be done with a "local" sorority and everything (ex. Delta Nu separating from Chi Omega at Dickinson College in the 80s I believe?), but is it possible that we separate and start a new chapter of an NPC sorority? I know that sometimes if chapters are too small they will absorb all into one and become an NPC sorority, but is this possible if we're already initiated sisters of one NPC organization? I love my pledge class and the girls that have come after us, but the older sisters have been a thorn in our sides for so long now.

OK, I'll assume that you are not some troll and answer this....

No. You may not ever be a member of any other NPC group. Ever.

If you wish to resign your membership in your NPC organization, you may join any local you wish or start your own local. Understand that this means that you will no longer be a member or alumna of your sorority. Any of your sisters or daughters will not be considered a legacy when it comes time for college. Understand that many universities do not allow locals on campus. You might check into that.

I do think you are being incredibly short sighted. These sisters that are such a "thorn in your side" will be graduating soon. They will all be gone soon and you & your pledge class can run the chapter however you wish.

You are (likely) a freshman in college and therefore know all things about all things and you are WAY smarter than your elders. You joined this awesome perfect sorority and started making friends. Then low and behold, these women aren't perfect. Some of them (gasp!) aren't exactly like you. And that makes them 1-wrong and 2-not worthy of your friendship or respect.

Your choices basically boil down to 2 things:1-put on your big girl pants and learn to work with women who are different from you. Or 2-quit and start a seriously lame local sorority that will never really get off the ground and not outlive your term in college. Yes, locals succeed and even thrive, but it is rare, particularly on campuses that have and support NPC. And many campuses (read: all Big 10, SEC, Big 12, Pac 10) won't allow locals because they are dangerous dens of hazing and unregulated drugs and alcohol.

But hey, you do you and best of luck.

sratgirly, put yourself in the actives' shoes. Look at things from their point of view. Step back and look at the big picture, get some perspective and show some insight. You might be a thorn in their side, you know???

Bluntly put, your idea is incredibly short-sighted, selfish, self-serving, and destined to fail. You already know you can't join another NPC sorority, ever. And starting up a local is not going to give you what you say you seek (which I'm going to be polite and not spell out, because frankly I am thinking things that aren't very nice).

Put your energy into continuing to strengthen and build your chapter. Build sisterhood, with all the members, not just your pledge class. Be kind to those older sisters. THEY recruited YOU, you know - right? Think about what that means. They've stuck it out and the last thing they need or deserve is for a group of know-it-all freshmen to dis them and treat them in such a shabby fashion. For the love of Mike, show some maturity and review the vows you took when you pledged and were initiated. Remember that your pledge class will be recruiting new members and that is a good place to see some more changes (which can be negative or positive, it all depends on who you select as new members. But you wouldn't know that yet since you haven't been through recruitment "on the other side". AAMOF I suspect you have no real grasp of what it takes to run a chapter.).

Or don't. Just quit. And see how good it feels a year from now, five years, ten years down the line.

In that example, the entire chapter separated from the national organization due to a disagreement over racist membership policies. A similar situation occurred with a different NPC group at St. Lawrence University, and the local that formed is still active today. That is not at all the same thing as the younger classes wanting to break off and form their own group because they feel the older members are somehow dragging them down.

Ok, I have to ask... what is it about your chapter that's SO BAD that you want to abandon not only your sisters, but the sorority as a whole?

Are your sisters hazing new members? Is heavy drinking/drug use taking place? Are there obvious divides among sisters due to different socio-economic backgrounds or racial discrimination?

You took an oath at initiation to love your sorority for a lifetime. What is it that makes you want to break that promise?
