Visiting campuses with huge Greek systems
 

I recently visited the University of Oregon where I noticed the Greek community was pretty big. All the houses were awesome! I was soooooooooo jealous!! I go to a small school in comparison where the Greek community is a whole lot smaller. Has anyone else been amazed when they visit another college campus where the Greek community was so prominent?

I visited Penn State and was in shock for a week over the fraternity houses. They were humungous compared to our made-over family houses.

If you ever get a change to go to South Carolina, USC's just now starting to build houses, and they are HUGE and GORGEOUS!!! I mean, not to brag about our school or anything, but since we are the only school in the state with houses that look like this, I just wanted to brag a little bit.;)

UBC's Greek System is pretty big as far as canadian universities go, but then I visited UW one year - I was super jealous. They have so many fraternities and sororities there and all the houses are so gorgeous.

Yep, it sucks to go to Big Campuses and see the Houses!

I have only been to a few:

KU, KSU, William-Jewell, Mu, NU, UK, U Ark,OkU, and I go wow, my poor house sucks!

Well, when you go from a small school of 1200 to 6500 to schools that or in the thousnads it seems aweson!

But would rather be a person than a number!

I'm from an extremely small Greek school... while there are 4 fratnerities on campus all the chapters are small.

There are 2 sororities (one local and one NPHC) and 2 NPC colonies, but once again.. small chapters.

Only one GLO on our campus has a house.. and it is more of a shack than anything, but we still love gathering there because they are a great group of guys.

So when I travel around the state and even out of state, and see a "Fraternity Row" with lots of Greek houses, we all get jealous.. no matter how big the "Row" or the houses are.

The first Greek 'experience' I had was @ Cornell...great houses, good sized system. LOVED IT. Of course I go to a school as small as my HS with only 2 fraternities and 4 sororities. Go figure!

But at least there's Lehigh on the other side of town!:D

I go to a school where there are 2 IFC fraternities, 3 NPC sororities/fraternities, and 3 NPHC fraternities/sororities and none of us have houses. We can't have any because they're illegal in our city, unless the school builds them and they are on university property. So even when going to a school that doesn't have a very large Greek system, but has houses makes us a little envious.

We never had a Greek Row at SF State...our NPC/NIC/NPHC system is tiny compared to other schools. That always made my visits home--and to the University of Arizona--really bittersweet! The houses there are just lovely. My favorite houses were Gamma Phi Beta's (Spanish Hacienda), Alpha Phi's (also Spanish), and Chi Omega's (Southern through and through). :)

There were thirty-plus houses on campus when I was in college, and a couple more now, but I was absolutely blown away when I visited Indiana University.

I totally understand this TPASteph. At Rutgers, everyone also says we are nothing but numbers. Well, while not EVERY single professor and student might know you, you would be surprised by what a small world it is. I run into people I know all the time. In my major and minor, my professors know me by name as well. Even some of my freshman year intro class professors remember me and still say hello when they see me on campus. Greek system wise, while we may have TONS of fraternities and sororities, "going Greek" is considered stupid and not necessary for a lot of RU students, making a lot of chapters smaller than they would be. Still, practically every national fraternity and sorority have a house and we do have a Frat Row. So in some aspects we are lucky. And I honestly could not see MYSELF anywhere else but good ole Rutgers. Plus, everytime I visit a small college, I feel like I am in high school all over again. Thats NOT what I want to feel like while being at college! :p

UW Greek System
 

I've only been to a couple greek systems (UW,WSU,EasterWU, WesternWU, UofIdaho(if they even had one)) but have to say that people seem to really like ours(UW). We have around 45 houses and all of them have a house. The houses are huge(mansions) and have over 3,000 greeks here. I guess being part of the greek system helps you be a individual at such a large university. You may be a number at the school but in your house your much more. Just my two sense.

I totally love UW's campus! I look at the beautiful, huge old houses and am so jealous (there's a couple of fraternity houses that are kind of boxy, but overall most of them are gorgeous). I came from a much smaller system where half of the houses were basically dorms built in the 50s, so I was very jealous the first time I saw UW's Greek area.

But I have to admit I don't remember what the Theta Xi house looks like.

only 4% of the student body is greek at my school. We have too many GLO's than is healthy for our system, only a handfull of which are in "houses" of any sort. My "house" is a section of the dorms. When I went to Cornell I was ipmressed... they have like SSSSSSSSSSSOOOOOOOOOO many more greeks there, most of whom have houses, an' throw sweet-@$$ parties.

I hear the situations much better down south.
