The benifits of being small...
I know some sorors brought up the topic of wishing we were bigger some time ago. I got this today from my e-group. Please read this. Trust me, being smaller has WONDERFUL advantages. [Not hatin' the others. It's all one luv... :)]
Soror NinjaPoodle ps yes I did edit just a little for identifying purposes ********************************************** "I have the "I just got back from the Boule Blues" I miss my roomies taking my stuff! I miss seeing sorors everywhere! I miss being tired 'cause I had to go to yet another Sigma function! I miss the I Team! I miss the vendors! Let's give a big hand to the vendors who came to be with us. And most of all--- I miss having my room cleaned everyday! j/k! (not really) I didn't get to see any of Miami. But I saw soooooo many Sorors that I can wait to see Miami when the Sorors aren't there! As you all may know, another sorority had it's biannual meeting the same time as ours. That organization had X-number plus in attendance. When I first heard that number I was a little sad especially since we had a little under X-number registered attendees. Then I had a few experiences. In the Grand Meeting when I approached the mic, our Grand Basileus greeted me as "Soror 'last name'" before I opened my mouth. Later that day I sat in the lobby chit chatting with PGB So-and-so about some innocuous topic. I saw my Dean walking down the hall with one of my Shippies and a Soror I'd made 29 years ago. I saw my old grad advisor. I ran into an Internet buddy-Soror whom I'd never seen, at the Step Show after party. I asked about the status or Soror CD, the Central Region Syntaktes 29 years ago, and receive current information. I got to give a pair of "gold glitter" shoes, that I will NEVER wear again, to an undergrad who thought they were "the BOMB" because we were chatting in the elevator. She checked on me for the rest of the Boule. I got to chit chat with PGB Green as we worked on a project. I meet and made friends with sorors from every Region. After about the second day at Boule, I appreciated the fact that there were not X-number of people there. Yes, I hope one day to have at least 20% of our total membership at our biannual meeting. But for now I know there is a benefit in being small; the development and maintenance of meaningful relationships. For a Soror like myself who is neither rich, famous or holds any special office, it feels really good to belong to a sisterhood where people matter and the leaders aren't too important to share a little "down time" with us ordinary members. There is much to be said for the women whom we call SISTER. We may not always agree. We may from time to time have different politics. But, at the end of the day we seem to know who we are and whose we are. As I sat in the Philo pageant joking with the Past Grand Sister (a name she cherishes), I felt the glow of genuine warmth and caring that would not have been possible in the Super Dome or where ever you have to house a billion people for a meeting. As Dr. King said "I may not get there with you" but one day, we too will have great numbers on the books and at meetings. By that time however, I sincerely hope that we maintain the personal contact and affection that we have today. " |
Sorhor Ninapoodle,
Thanks for sharing another spin on the true meaning of sisterhood! It's really all about the quality;) ! Serioussigma22:cool: |
Soror...
I couldn't agree more.:)

*BUMP* :D
Just a little reminder as we begin a new school year.... |
Thanks !

*bump again!*
I attended several Congressional Black Caucus events, hosted by other Greek organizations. It felt good to be "announced" -- "the Rhos are here", "There's a Sigma Gamma Rho", etc. I was able to meet the heads of these organizations and they treated me as if I was a national officer. One event I went to, me and my girl were the only Sigma women there, we received the utmost Rhoyal treatment.
When I meet a Soror out in public we greet each other and talk as if we have known each other for years. Much to the amazement of others around us, it's like an instant bond. I could go on and on but it was nice to see our Grand Basileus Owens walk in on our Area I meeting this past weekend and call out different Sorors by first name and exclaim, "I see all my friends!" |
Amen!!!
Sorhor Bluereign you are so very right! Serioussigma22:cool: |
Small....???
...boasting over 70,000 members in over 450 chapters worldwide including Germany, the Bahamas, the Virgin Islands...is NOT small.
*Elite* maybe, but definitely not small. Elite in the sense that you will probably never run into a #84 club in Sigma. We keep it tight, family-like and sisterly. Our size is a plus, because you can foster a real sense of sisterhood among the members and leadership inside and outside of Sigma. I wish I would walk/drive past another Sigma SoRHOr. I think that is illegal in 50 states..... and in our handbook ;) :D I Am My Sister's Keeper....in all senses' of the phrase. Aurora6 Sigma ...because REAL sisterhood takes REAL work! |

Sorhor Aurora6,
I know what you mean about not have the nerve to pass by a sorhor without getting-in-touch with the sista! That's just not how things are done with the ladies of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. because we truly are "Our Sisters Keepers." Serioussigma22:cool: |
don't let me see a soRHOr in public
my only prayer is PLEASE, LAWD, don' t let me see another SIGMA GAMMA RHO tag as i drive down the RHOad because there will be a 22 car pile up as i attempt to flag her down and throw up my little sign!
please, LAWD, don't let me catch a soror in the mall because a few people might get mowed down as i make my way over to hug her so tight she can hardly breathe! but if I see one on campus, i'm taking NO prisoners! i'm going to ee-yip like its my last time... at a university with over 45,000 people, i STILL GET excited when i see a soror! SIGMA definitley keeps it tight... |
Sorors,
I thank God that he enabled me to see the Blue skies and the Gold Sun!!! I thought that I wanted to part of a bigger sisterhood, but now that I see the love that I received from my Sorors, I won't want anything else. I do wish that we would have bigger numbers but I have come to realize that people now a days want something that they heard about in high school or the want to be part of the organization that brought in 50 people last semester and are scared to experience other options when joining a Sorority. But are these ladies happy now? Many are not and have expressed how they wish they could have been a Sigma Gamma Rho. Just my $.22!!!!!!!! |
The benefits of being truly *ELITE*
Love, Love, Love, the Sigma Love!
Soror Ninjapoodle, the rolling smiley said it all. You KNOW the deal. Soror Bluethunder...I heard that sister. You've definitely got that SIGMA-tude girl! Eee-Yip right back at you my sister! \\o/ <----- throwing you the Sigma! Soror PrettyPoodle95....What's up Sands?! '95 was Goooood Sigma Year! The TORCH will always guide you if you only have the fortitude to follow the flame. You know what girl, I always tell people "Please don't believe the hype", every Divine 9 sisterhood is worthy. And you know what, we are growing & expanding throughout the world but at our pace and in our time. I think our *Elite* size in one of our greatest assests....it seperates the women from the girls so to speak. It takes a confident, independent, strong, trailblazing women to be a Sigma. Our size alone helps us weed out all the "fluff" who may only want to join a sorority for the "Resume building" or for the "hype" or for the "glitz & glammour" of sorority life. I think women know that when they come this way, they will have to work and EARN their respect in my Sisterhood. Not sitting on your rump, riding coat tails, hiding behind the masses of members, or tradition, or history, or what your moma pledged, or your looks, or even what your boyfriend thinks you should pledge.... (Yeah, I went there) So if this is you and what inspires you to pursue a sorority, you need not apply because Sigma does NOT need you! We want *women of substance* & We expect you to work! We expect you to WALK the TALK, we expect you to KNOW THYSELF and encourage you to grow & be the INDIVIDUAL that only YOU can be. We expect you to discover your own personal Greatness and we will work with you to help you to realize your full potential & enhance it. And we expect you to do this even if you have to do it all by your dammie (all by yourself) The SIGMA LEGACY is RHOyal.......recognize your Greatness & Just BE! All the while though, we DO NOT TOLERATE: you changing your character to fit a mold, developing the "big head" thinking 3 african inspired greek letters just made you God's gift, putting on airs, acting snotty & snobbish looking down at other sisters whether they are in your sorority or not, perpetuating negative stereotypes about our community, or being TOO GOOD to get down in the trenches if need be to work with those in our community who need us the most, not just the glamorous, highly social events, balls, & galas that stroke YOUR ego. Sigma...because REAL sisterhood takes REAL work! Aurora6 "...Guarding each aim....lest we shall prove..." \\o/ |
Having wonderful sorhors like Sorhor Sigma Tweety who really is a gold mine, lifesaver, true blue trooper and just a sorhor that knows the meaning of "I am my Sister's Keeper." God bless you Sorhor Sigma Tweety!
Serioussigma22:cool: |
Thank you Sorhor SeriousSigma22!
The benefits of being small? We're close; we cherish our sisterhood; and we take our pledge seriously. We are the rhoad less traveled, but it's a rhoad full of PLEASANT surprises. For those of you who don't know take this test... The next time you're compelled to ask a woman of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc., WHY she chose "that" sorority, take a look at the expression on my sorhor's face... Oftentimes, you will see that she is not upset nor offended. You may notice a slight beguiling smile. We're known for NOT telling our business :). We know why....;) Sorhors! You know....Membership has it's privileges. Enough said! EEE-YIP Sorhors!!! |
