Bairds Manual
Anybody knows if Bairds going to release a new manual. The last one is over 5 years old and needs to be updated. On a lighter note, Devils one game away!!!!!!!!

Baird's no longer publishes this book. They sold the copyrights to NIC and the last time it was printed was in 1991. They will not print an updated version until the last run has been sold.

I had read that they weren't planning another edition until after the '91 (that was the most recent edition) sold. I didn't know that they sold the rights.
It's a great resource (even though it's getting old http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif). I wonder how the NIC's control will help/hinder the next edition(s)? ------------------ SilverTurtle@greekchat.com Phi Beta Fraternity Phi chapter |
SilverTurtle:
Well one thing about the 1991 edition (NIC control) that is markedly different from previous editions was that locals were eliminated. In past editions, I think the last one published before 1991 was in 1977, there was a listing of every known active and extinct local fraternity, sorority and society. I am not sure of the reason for this except maybe to cut down on the production costs. I think that this missing information is a lost resource. Quote:

That's the kind of thing I was afraid of. I have seen both of those editions, but I didn't realize that control of the production had been tranferred. I know that my GLO's info is identical in the 2 editions. (It's listed as "no new information available" or something. And with some minimal effort the proper person(s) could have been contacted to update the needed info).
I hope in future publications they will revive locals and othe organizations. It's a disservice to all of us, greek or not, to leave anyone out of what is supposed to be the comprehensive GLO resource. ------------------ SilverTurtle@greekchat.com Phi Beta Fraternity Phi chapter |
Silver - I am really glad you brought that up about the info being the same. It happened to my sorority too!! I couldn't believe it when I saw it - I thought SURELY someone at our nationals would have sent the form in, or whatever. That's not the type of thing you blow off. This is an NPC group by the way!
Just from a snap judgement call, it sounds like they are not trying very hard to keep Baird's up to what its reputation is and just want the $$$$. That business about waiting till the 1991 run is all sold is asinine. They used to publish every 10 years, period. Can you imagine if World Book did that? And eliminating the locals is wrong - there are locals that are older than nationals! I get p.o.'ed at the anti-local bias that NIC and NPC sometimes seem to exhibit. I can understand that they want people to be a part of the organizations they represent, but being national is not for everyone (individuals or chapters). That should be respected not degraded. “No matter the letter we’re all Greek together” includes ALL Greeks, not just NIC & NPC! |
Oops, I mean ten years ago. Sorry, missed by like 5 yrs. Anyway, I think the reason why they do not have locals is because it is almost impossible to record every locals out there. By just concentrating on nationals is easier.
I do agree then they need to update the info more frequently then every 10 yrs. A lot of the info in the book are pretty much outdated. Every two years seems to be workable. Just like most manuals are updated every two years. Devils, one game away, again. And Bret Hull . . . . your skate was on a crease last year!!!!!!!!! ------------------ Proud member of BNM Society(Banned from Napster by Metallica) |

Our GLO is a member of PFA.. so it's not like they just couldn't figure out where to get our info or who to contact. I'm pretty sure that our national exec board at the time would have been more than happy to share the new/updated info! I think you're definately right about the $$, too! And what you said that I really agree with: Quote:
Part of what made Baird's so informative and useful (and would have made me want to spend about $100 on my own edition) was that it had everybody and everything... even chapters/organizations that were no longer active or in existence. Greek letterered or not (i.e. Triangle Fraternity, Farm House, etc.) It was just so comprehensive. What's going to keep NIC from making the next edition NIC organizations only? Ok, that was my rant for the day http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif ------------------ SilverTurtle@greekchat.com Phi Beta Fraternity Phi chapter |
