True Greek Life
 

Well this is my inception post, so if I sound like a newbie, it's because I am one. I have been looking everywhere for a Hellenic chat where I can discuss any idea about Greek life and society with fellow Hellenics. I live in Rochester, NY, and I love speaking about Greek current events and Greek politics. A subject that is very near and dear to my psyche is the "Macedonian Question". I'm sure, if you are Greek, that you are aware of this controversial issue gracing internet news sites. I am amazingly disturbed at the amount of propaganda that the Republic of Vardarska (its actual name, NOT Makedonia) is producing year in and year out. It seems they spend more time producing this material than actually bettering their own nation and its people. Just wanted to express my opinion that Makedonia is a total Hellenic hemogonized region and its history is shared with the rest of Greece.

I'm sorry, girl. I must be completely stupid. I completely missed what you were trying to explain! Can you do it in more obvious terms for those of us that are a little behind?

Ms. HotDamnImAPhiMu, I think what the poster is saying is that, as a
result of the Balkan Wars of 1912-13 and the Treaty of Bucharest, the
area historically known as Macedonia was partitioned among Serbia,
Greece, and Bulgaria. These regions are now known as the Republic of
Macedonia (independent since 1991), Aegean Macedonia (occupied by
Greece since 1913), and Pirin Macedonia (occupied by Bulgaria since
1913). There is also a small part of Macedonia presently in Albania
(known as Mala Prespa).

Greece treats the recognition of Macedonia as a country in it's own
right as a sensitive issue, similar in some ways to the situation
between China and Taiwan. They consider the recognition granted by
the UN in 1991 as a setback and a mistake. Both on a political and
personal level, Greeks (that is to say, citizens of the country known
as Greece) have gone from being in denial about the issue, to taking a
more "assimilationist" viewpoint, which is what this poster is doing.

I guess it's kind of like how FarmHouse Fraternity was reluctant to
recognize it's FarmHouse Sisters organization as a sorority in it's
own right, but later saw the light of day and spun it off as Ceres.

Does it all make sense now?

(PS: This thread could easily be adapted into an article for "The Onion".)

I think that you got the wrong typw of subject. This is for fraturnities and sororities, not the country Greece.

Well, you've hit "greekchat" but certainly not the kind of chat you're looking for. the only "greek" we are concerned with here are the alphabet..and maybe their fraternity/sorority mottos.

Being Greek-American myself (and of 'real' Macedonian descent), I have found the best discussion areas are in the in the newsgroup soc.culture.greek or if you have AOL, go to aol://5863:126/mB:89738 - it's a message board discussing the "Politics of Greece".

Otherwise, 99% of the people here have no idea what you're talking about.
