90210 Pi Phi references
So I started binge watching 90210, and am noticing TONS of Pi Phi references! Naomi talks about how she's always wanted to be a Pi Phi, and the school's "pass the torch" dance seems awfully similar to Firedance. Anyone know if the producers, directors, etc have Pi Phi connections? Thought it was super interesting.

I know 1 of the writers for the show (former neighbor). Will ask next time I see him.

We have several threads on GC about books and shows with Greek references. One show with Pi Phi references was Designing Women--one of the Sugarbakers was one. A book that had several Pi Phi references was Three's a Crowd, published in the fifties!

I also seem to recall House of Cards referencing women as being members of Tri-Delta and Pi Phi. I imagine part of it is that those are larger, well-known sororities with very recognizable nicknames, thus making them a sort of shorthand for referencing sororities as a whole in a TV show.

I remember that Charlotte in Sex in the City was a Kappa Kappa Gamma, and had lunch with several of her sisters in one episode, and they were scandalized by a racy comment she made.

Suzanne Sugarbaker (not Delta Burke) was a Pi Phi at Ole Miss. |
Designing Woman also occasionally referenced Alpha Delta Pi. Jean Smart (Charlene) is not only an ADPi, but we share a birthday (just not the same year!).
Are we talking about the original 90210? I'm trying to place Naomi! |
