What Happend to AEPhi?

Hey, I that AEPhi's nationals were closeing down. I heard they were going to be running for 4 or 5 years more and then closeing out all their chapters. I was wondering if there is any truth to this rumor and If there is, if anyone clould tell me why they are shutting down. Just curious! Thanks!

I'm going to bump this up because this sounds bizzare and I want to know if there is any truth to this....AEPhi has a chaper at the UA and it's really strong so this sounds like it might not be true.....

aephi alum 07-28-2002 01:04 PM

There is no truth to this rumor as far as I am aware. I'd like to know the rumor's source...

I go to Davis too, theres no AEPhi chapter on campus, and they left a few years ago, maybe that has something to do with it.

I hope not....

I hope that it is just a rumor because we need our nationals to stay around. The more nationals, locals, and etc. the more Greeks. So, I hope it is a rumor which it is because an AEPhi said so. Read what "aephi alum" wrote. More than like-ly "aephi alum" would have heard first if AEPhi was going to close HQ. You would hope your national would tell you if they were going to close. Right?

Assuming that this is a total rumor, even if it might be true, wouldn't it be a better idea to merge with another national as opposed to just closing all the chapters out?

AEPhi is actually colonizing a chapter at my school (University of Iowa) this fall, and I highly doubt they would go through all that trouble if they were planning to close down in 4 or 5 years. Not to mention I doubt our Panhel would want a chapter to colonize if they weren't planning on sticking around.

Just as a hypothetical:

Let's say that an NPC sorority decided on the national level to shut down. Couldn't the existing chapters choose to form their own national headquarters? It seems that as long as there are initiates, there could be a sorority...

I suspect that this thing is a rumor.

However, as time passes Greek Letter Organizations are being hit with much higher expenses. Risk Management is a much bigger issue. Lawsuits are rampant. Numbers are a problem in some locations.

It would not surprize me at all to see a national organization (or more than one) give up and close in the next few years. I would be VERY surprized if the first is a sorority, though. The fraternities have much bigger issues -- mostly due to alcohol/risk management problems.

I think it would be a very daunting task to form a new national at this point in time.

Yes. (douthit can clarify this next part) When PSE and PSK merged, some of the PSE's were not happy about it, so they made Phi Kappa Phi. They became a national org.

The national would be the one holding the trademarks and right to use the same ritual so if they decided to shut down, the chapters remaining would most likely have to create a new ritual and rename themselves.

Hi Max,

No. I don't know enough about each organization separately. Only what I read (which is very general) in a risk management newsletter called FRMT Times (I think) which comes to Delt division officers.

The most worrisome senario to me is a smaller fraternity getting hit with a huge lawsuit for...well whatever. The opposite is that even a large organization getting hit with several ongoing suits.

Beyond that, there have already been a couple of chapters who have folded because they couldn't afford the ever-increasing insurance payments from their National.

If numbers go down, the Nationals themselves won't be able to afford insurance. Then it's over for them.

Although I know very little about them, I would think this is a huge problem for locals who don't have the membership and alumni base to support them.

Yeah, you're right on the Phi Kappa Phi part. This split isn't covered in our new member education, for obvious reasons :), and as far as I know, they are almost exclusively in the upper midwest.

I would be pretty sure that the ritual is different from the Phi Sigma Epsilon one. But I wouldn't be surprised at all if the rituals are somewhat or quite similar, just because that is what they know and are used to. The one thing that interests me is whether any remnants of PSE exist to pursue legal means if there are any similarities between the PSE and PKP rituals.

Yaay, my 100th post!!!!

Just so you know, there is word in the NPC world that a sorority may be closing within a few years. Not sure who, but this has been going in and out of ears for about 18 months now....Would hate to see it come to fruition.....
