Bill proposes online database of fraternity/sorority infractions

Full article is here, but here is the gist:

Quote:

Responding to the death of Clemson University student Tucker Hipps, an Upstate legislator called Thursday for creating an online database listing arrests, investigations and violations linked to fraternities and sororities.

Putnam said his legislation is meant to "improve safety for college students" by providing "every tool for students and parents to make wise decisions."

He said the measure would require incidents involving fraternities, sororities and other social organizations at the state's public colleges and universities to be published online. The online database would include information about how each arrest, investigation and violation involving these organizations was resolved.

Under provisions of his bill, students and their parents would be made aware of the online database before students begin the process of joining a fraternity or sorority.
I think this is pretty crazy. I can't really see anything coming from it, but I definitely thought it was interesting.

While something like this will make good press, I can fore see nothing but problems for Greeks in the future!

Now is a major time for Greeks to quit acting like morons and act like adults!

How is an arrest "linked" to a fraternity?

Griffins&Quills 12-04-2015 05:01 PM

Sounds like a witch hunt to me

It always is with these dweebs.

Millenials are an interesting breed, which at least one poll shows, they hold free speech in very low regard.

http://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank...to-minorities/

In the above poll, 40% of millenials surveyed believed that the government should be able to punish people who say offensive things about minorities. What could possibly go wrong?

Honestly, everything has become sooooooo politically correct, we're almost going in the opposite direction

Well we are. If you subscribe to the pendulum effect theory, Trump's current popularity is most likely attributed to this PC craziness. I saw a headline the other week about a college canceling a 9/11 memorial service because they didn't want to offend muslims.

I really do get a kick when my far left friends post their shock and outrage about Trump on social media. I really feel like they are the ones that created that monster and should be apologizing to the moderates and centrists in the country for it.

So parties held by athletic teams, random house parties, or bars with notoriously lax admission/serving standards will never be to blame for anything? This is one of the most blatant examples of discrimination I've ever seen.

Best phrase ever regarding the hypocrisy surrounding Greek Letter Organizations;

honestly, have they just given up on pretending we're not a scapegoat for campus problems?

I'd think there are some serious privacy issues involved with publishing details of an investigation or arrest, vice a conviction which is public record.

I applaud the sentiment of having information available about safety, but not this proposal.

This is a bunch of crap. We dance around trying to pass a bill that would establish a national database to prohibit criminals or the mentally ill from purchasing a firearm, but we can promote THIS?
It's fine to focus on accountability, but this is a bridge too far.

Precisely the same issue - no need to create databases of those who have not been adjudicated guilty. There is a database of criminal convictions, and we see that it is not infallible.

This is the actual bill.

This makes it sound like we're all criminals, and the mommies and daddies of potential new members need to be warned that we may corrupt their super special snowflakes.
