Musicians?

Do you play a musical instrument? For how long?
What kind of music do you/have you played?

What type of gigs have you (if any) played?

kddani 07-24-2002 09:42 AM

i played clarinet since i was nine (haven't touched it in a few years, it's in my closet somewhere), and I played mellophone in the high school marching band. I miss it, but I didn't have time during undergrad to keep with it.

I played piano for several years when I was younger but stopped taking lessons when my softball games began to intrude on practice time. Looking back, I wish that I had made time for both activities. I would love to have a piano in my home again. Maybe one day I'll be able to pick up where I left off. :)

I played the cello from 4th to 6th grade!

APhiRattlerGal 07-24-2002 11:37 AM

I've played the piano since i was five....dont really play all that much anymore. And when i was in high school I played viola in the school orchestra, we rocked!! I also used to write music and some friends of mine and myself kinda formed a band and we played 6th street in austin during that time. It was great!! I wouldnt change those experiences for the world. Music is very much a part of my life...

I started playing both the guitar and drums when I was about seven or eight but I didn't really get the hang of anything for a few years. Played religiously until I was about 14 then it dropped off. I have recently started playing the guitar again, when I can find the time.

I have actually performed two acoustic shows (small ones) at local coffee shops and one here at our fraternity house, nothing major, but it was fun all the same.

I also played the french horn! LOL

Any good stories from band camp?

Dionysus 07-24-2002 11:57 AM

I used to play the violin, then it got boring and I didn't to be seen as a band geek. So I dropped out. Needless to say, I was still seen as a geek anyways. :D

There's a thread that already exists

Err, there's a thread on instruments that already exists in Chit Chat. It's called "What instrument do you play?" and can be found by doing a search. :)

My only musical experience was on piano, 6th grade. But I was too impatient to follow through. If I wanted to be in band, I would have played flute, a double-reed instrument or French horn.

I've played the piano for about 15 years now, since I was five. I've played the cello for 3 years and guitar for about 6 or 7. I still play my guitar and piano at least 30 min everyday, but the cello ive kind of slacked on, because it's such a pain in my ass to get out of its case and set up.

gphi2k2 07-24-2002 04:56 PM

I played the flute for 9 years. I still have my flute...just gotten lazy.

And as inquiring minds will want to know, i actually DID go to band camp ;) .

Started playing piano back in the 3rd grade. That dropped off about the same time I picked up the violin.

I've done lots with the violin. I've played in church, weddings, operas, etc. It's currently paying for most of my school since I'm in the school's orchestra.

My favorite experience though was when I played with a jam band... Fiddling. Nothing like being able to go into a bar, play for people who love your music and then get free drinks... That was back when I was 19 or 20 which made it even better.:D

<---band geek

Well, this is my deal:

5th-7th grade- Clarinet (GAG!)

7th-college - Bassoon

9th-college - Trumpet

Also I've played piano for a few years and guitar *shrugs* As for 'gigs' I play Taps for any Vetern service they need me for and I play for my city's orchestral program. Plus I give free lessons to youngins' when I have the time :) It's one expensive hobby, thats for sure :) I once totaled up the cost (instruments, lessons, etc) together and I figured my parents paid almost 20k for 9 years of it..ick.

Oh, band camp...a week long sex ed class

dzsaigirl 07-24-2002 05:30 PM

I have played the trombone for 13 years and the euphonium for 9 years. My first gigs were free, in high school. I was in a chamber ensemble outside of school and we were too stupid to know we should charge people when we played for them! Those were for various churches, the Coast Guard, etc.

Then in college, I had a gig every Easter. I did brass ensemble gigs, as well as "hired help" orchestra, where a church with a full orchestra brings professionals in for the Easter service or Christmas program so that it sounds better (only REALLY big churches do that, ex: Second Baptist in Houston...). I have also done some stuff for corporate things...like this dixie land crap that a company called Dixie wanted some of us to do at their annual picnic...really retarded, and I played a mock "pep rally" in an airplane hanger for Southwest Airlines (even MORE retarded!). So I have done mostly classical chamber music type stuff, plus sort of jazz, contemporary stuff too. I do not like to gig. It is fast money, but I do not like being told what to play (special orders...) and sometimes the playing environment is not so great (like wind blowing necessitating clothespins for your music or blowing your stand over, conductors who are impossible to follow, not spending time with your family on holidays 'cause you're out on a gig...).

Now that I am out of college and will soon have a real job, I won't need to gig for my Christmas shopping money and my tax money at Easter (which is why I MADE myself gig then!). I guess if asked, I might play for someone again, but it would just be for fun money. In college, it is really hard to turn down $350 for one hour of work!

Play piano and guitar by ear-------really stink at it, but it amuses me. Wrote a song and played the guitar in a talent show in HS. Was in several traveling bands but mostly performed in Houston. (singing, not torturing people with my lack of talent wth an instrument) Mostly country rock but did the 40's, 50's stuff with the college jazz band here in town after the kids were born.

edited-ktsnake-------YOUR turn!:D
