Did you join the divine nine?

I was wodnering if any of the African Americans on the board got any flack for joining a GLO that wasnt a part of the divine nine? Some guys and I are starting TKE, and my parents are giving me 100% support, but they always thought I would join one of the black fraternities.

I know EXACTLY what you are talking about!

My dad is an Omega Psi Phi, my mom and sister and aunts are all Delta Sigma Theta, and I joined a "white" fraternity. Yeah, my dad especially wasn't pleased about it, but he wanted me to go to Howard as well, so he was kind of expecting that if I went Greek, I wouldn't join a BGLO. But, you have to go where you will be the most comfortable. The Omegas at my school are not guys I have much in common with, so it wasn't going to happen anyway. Good luck with your decision-it isn't easy being a minority in a non-BGLO, but a brother is a brother no matter who you are and where you pledged.

Yeah same here my dad pledged Kappa Alpha Psi, he always thought there would be a legacy there. However the school I am at does not have that BGLO. Its always tough when you disappoint your parents.

I didn't get any flack from my immediate family, but select people in my extended family (mainly the Afr. Am side) were like why didn't you join a historically Black sorority in the divine nine. Everyone else knew better to ask me that because I will always do what I want to do.

PotentialPledge do what is best for you, dog! I am African-American and Jap-American and I get love from all the Divine Nine and Asian-American org. on campus because I rep. strong! At first I wanted to join Omega Psi Phi because of my Uncle. He did not influence my decision on wanting to go Omega; I wanted to go there because he was in it. However, after finding a old friend in a national fraternity not in the divine nine ( I do not label my fraternity a "white" one because we are not! We are a brotherhood and that is it!) I asked him some questions and he answered em'. It was all good, and I did my own research and found PHI KAPPA TAU the best in the nation. I did mad research on Omega and Phi Tau and meet the guys and I felt that the better org. for ME was of course Phi Tau. I choose Phi Tau for it best repersented me. If TKE best reps. for you, do it with no "buts". Make sure they are the one that you can put in your heart and have no regrets. Do your research, and do not feel that you have to choose them. Look at every org. and if you like em'; listen to no one else.

Re: Did you join the divine nine?

I know, I know, APO isn't QUITE the same thing. . .BUT. . .

My mom, the old school Delta, was cool with me choosing APO. . .she also knew deep down that I could still pursue another org if I wanted down the road.

My friends knew that I would rep APO to the fullest, and I did. . .that helped start a trend on my campus. Folks in APO, particularly minorities, got along really well with BGLO's.

Of course I meet strangers:

"My son's an Alpha, too!"
"A-PHI!"
"Roo!"
"I see that you are a Que, what is Greek life like at GU?"

I think I got more questions than flack. . .like Eirene said, people knew that I was going to do whatever I wanted to do.
