Skits

OK, can I ask a question: are skits really a valid and effective recruitment tool?

I find them sort of antiquated and a sincere waste of valuable talking time...

Are they primarily a Southern/Midwest thing? Cuz I haven't met many Northeastern (region, not the school) Greeks who do them...

Opinions??

we do skits at penn state. their part of our third round parties.

Skits are part of the second round at Illinois...technically third round since open house isn't numbered as 1...but anyway, they are a great last chance to grab the attention of rushees before they decide their three picks for pref. They are a great opportunity to attract any fence-sitters who are still deciding.
I agree that talking is important though. I can't imagine sitting for more than a seven minute skit. Talk the rest of the time and continue to CHARM the rushees.

Hey
I go to school in NY and for formal rush every sorority does skits every day until pref:)

I went to school in Michigan and we NEVER did skits during recruitment.

skits...

I went to school in the Northeast and we did a round where we did a skit for formal recruitment. If the skit is put together well with important information, along with humor, it can be a GREAT recruitment tool!

I go to school in Virginia and we use skits in every formal recruitment. I think the positive aspect of the skits is that it provides information to the potentials while making them feel a little more at ease...It's a way to let them relax, have thier own space (because we all know that during the other parties there is always a sister talking to them), and laugh at the sisters....seeing how they interact with each other...whether it's staged or not.

I go to school in the South and we are big on our skits, but honestly, they are such a pain!!! Even the PNMs see them as outdated adn every year, each chapter has to try to find a more relevent skit... I know girls whose schools don't do them, and I wish our school would get rid f them....

hiya... my school is in north western pa and we do skits ... third nite, right before prefs... my campus is way no-frills, so decorations are not that big of a deal, but the effort put into the skit is obvious... i know it can see kind of silly or outdated, but i think that skits are another way of showing the personality of the chapter... how you laugh with one another and how much the sorority means to you, while conveying some more info to pnms... and it's a break from the usual for pnms. i know that one or two of the chapters have used the same skit for quite a while... it's a way of conveying tradition as well.

Ok, sorry to ask this, but what exactly are skits??? I mean, I understand that they're for recruitment... But what do you do with them? Is it like skits back in elementary school??? We don't have formal recruitment, so no one does anything like that here.

Fraternally,
Beth

Skits are basically where the sisters act something out for the potentials... Usually there is a script, which includes some of the sisters being "sisters" in the skit and others are "potentials". The "potentials" ask questions and the "sisters" answer it in a fun and informative way. Skits that have been done at my school include a fifties skit with songs from Grease changed to fit the sorority; a radio station where some girls during a slumber party call in to the radio station; Wheel of Fortune where the contestants where all women from different backgrounds, but interested in being more involved on campus; and a TRL skit where Britney Spears was leaving the music industry and going to college.

I like skits because they are a change of pace, plus we don't have to sit in front of the PNM on our knees the whole time!! Any one else have to be on their knees during rush when talking to the girls? I have trouble talking to people I don't know sometimes or I get sick of talking about the same subjects over and over. The skits give everyone time to relax and see the personality of the house. The skits really gave me an idea of which house I wanted to join and which ones I didn't want to join!
