Alumnus who cares 01-03-2001 10:20 AM

I wonder if it would help at all to keep reinforcing the fact that your own house doesn't haze very much. Maybe it would send a subliminal message that the house he's interested in is one that is big on hazing. But it wouldn't be against the rules because you would really only be talking about your own house. If that doesn't work, let him pledge this other house and find out for himself. If he doesn't like being hazed, he can de-pledge and join your house or another one.

I agree with Alumnus. By reiterating the "strong points" of your house, that could have an effect since you would obviously know what house he was interested in and he'd probably be able to figure something out. It may not hit him right away, but he'd probably start wondering why you were stressing it so much.

I think it depends on how close you are to the person in question. I mean if its someone that Im really good friends with and all, and I was sure that he wouldnt tell anyone that I told him, Id try to let him know that they have a reputation for bad hazing, make sure that he knows that Im just being a friend and all, just so that he is aware of it and would know what he is getting into. If I was in that situation id sure want someone to tell me, I mean it might not change my mind, but at least Id know about it. So I personally, if he is indeed a friend maybe mention something about it.

As Cartman would say, "That's what I call a sticky situation!"

One of my friends quit little sisters and decided to pledge a sorority that had a very bad hazing rep. People tried to tell her not to even go there, but she wouldn't listen. When I look back I wish I could have grabbed her and made her pledge us, cause I think she would have been happy with us. But as you said, it would have been a rush violation and we might have got infractions or worse for something that might not even have panned out. She ended up depledging anyway - but the thing that sucks is, she missed out on Greek life because she made an unwise choice.

The only thing I can think of that would even remotely work is an anonymous tip to the administration that this fraternity is hazing. Of course, there would have to be documented evidence and it all depends on how much the school wanted to pursue it. But if you think that this guy is in real danger, it might be best to not look away.

The standard practice in my chapter has been basically what would be considered a rush infraction. If we know someone who has considered going Greek but hasn't signed up for rush, we start rushing them. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/redface.gif Basically we start telling them how great we are and how ABC hazes like nothing and even the fraternity guys will tell you that XYZ is nothing but sluts. And why would would anyone want to be DFG, they'll circle your fat! "Oh and rush is a nightmare anyhow! You should just wait and do informal." (We've consistantly been the only ones even able to do COB.) http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/redface.gif (But honestly we don't make up anything!)

So basically, I would have tried to get the guy/girl to have never even looked at the other house. But I guess this is one of those things that should fall into more of Do as I say not as I do!

The subliminal thing sounds good. But maybe you could suggest that the guy talk to sorority members! As we're always reminded in our workshops, "Fraternities and Sororities do not have the same Rush rules!!!" Basically you can't talk trash about the other house, but the girls can!

I would let him rush the house. I don't think hazing is that bad. I mean it really builds character and closeness amongst the pledges.

parrotthead 01-04-2001 02:47 AM

hey socalgirl, what does circle your fat mean?
Hype, even if the house hazed in a way that wasnt exactly benefitial to the pledges?

Good for you Steve!

Parrotthead--The horrible sorority myth came true for one sorority on campus. They literaly circled their pledges fat!!! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/mad.gif The only reason why I know it's true is because one of our pledges was rooming w/ one of their pledges. How pathetic!

Oh my gosh, that's so upsetting...that's something you only see on those bad TV movies! I know the other sorority committed Rush infractions in recruiting me, but that's another post...oh well!

Dang, I can't believe that they actually did that. Thats awful.

When I started the local at Pittsburg, 1/2 of the members were from other Fraternitys. Just because a young Man/Woman pledged another house does not make them an outcast. We have 3 Fraternitys that I hear haze, ( cannot say for sure), but if they find out all that glitters is not gold, then if we think of them enough to have once wanted to pledge them then why not now. Being a Brother/Sister is not for just 4-5 years but a life time. I would rather have a good man as my Brother than know him at all!
