Yeah, just incase you havent got the message...DON"T DO IT. The reason that MTV is looking at locals, is all national GLO's have turned them down. Which makes you wonder, if every national GLO turned them down, maybe you should too. This show has shown...and what most of us already know...that you can try to teach your new members your values, but how they act when your not there, may not be the way you want the entire country to see. Just please, please be careful.

You should definitely do sorority life! It could be beneficial to yourself, your chapter, and your Greek System!

If every national turned them down . . well so what? Thats on them, obviously they didn't want to give their individual chapters the ability to choose their own destinies.

My two cents are that, on the one hand, MTV is basically evil and
symbolizes everything that's wrong with our shallow, youth-obsessed,
media-driven culture.

On the other hand, Pan Hellenic boards (on the local and national
level), are also basically evil, and if MTV has succeeded in pissing
off NPC they have my respect for that.

For example my campus (Cal Poly Pomona) has had four NPC sororities
for the past twenty years (KD, SK, ZTA, XO). At various times
Tridelt, and I believe ADPi and a few others have tried to colonize
but the local Pan Hellenic (in collaboration with NPC) was successful
in keeping them out.

Mind you, we are talking about a campus that has grown to more than
35,000 students, pretty close to 50% female. The way I see it, if
four sororities can't consistently make and exceed quota with numbers
like that, they have a problem with the way they market themselves,
and bringing in a fifth NPC sorority can't possibly do any harm. But
the process that NPC has defined for handling situations like this
seems more or less broken as far as I can tell. If someone who is a
current undergrad at Cal Poly can shed some light on this I'd be happy
to hear about it.

So it really depends on which evil is the lesser in your opinion. The
more I watch the show, the more begruding respect I have for Sigma
AEPi for doing this. I think it will be healthy for Greeks in the
long run. The fact that NPC and it's member orginiazations are
basically shitting over this is giving me some guilty pleasure, to be
honest.

It's like the ladies of Sigma AEPi are basically saying to everyone
else, "We have the autonomy to do this and we're going to do it, and if
you don't like it, well, you can just talk to my hand!"

If all four sororities are having a problem making quota, either the quota is too high or there is a problem marketing sorority life in general. The addition of a 5th sorority won't help that....when you say ADPi and DDD tried to colonize, do you mean the national orgs came in or that there was a group of women running around saying they wanted to go with those groups?

It sounds like the system there needs help, but tossing the current orgs to the side and bringing someone new in isn't the way to do it. There's enough of that isht already.

As I recall it was the nationals wanting to colonize, but you're
asking me to recall things that happened back in the 80's (yes I am
dating myself a bit here). I've kept tabs on my chapter over the
years but the basic situation with the four NPC sororities hasn't
changed. Cal Poly (Pomona, not SLO) has always had a weird "commuter
campus" culture and the Greeks have done a lot to change that but it
doesn't really "thrive" the way it does at places like UCLA or USC,
for example. Greek life at CSU campuses is a whole thread in itself.

My point was that the system with the *ahem* grown-up alums at the
nationals and NPC and NIC running things for the undergrads is a good
system, time-tested over the years, but it can get kind of set in it's
ways and if this whole situation shakes things up a bit, that can only
be for the better. If NPC wants to steer this MTV thing their way
they are going to have to do something other than turn their backs on
the whole situation, which is all they seem to be doing right now.

In the balance of power between the undergrads and the nationals, it
seems like the whole emphasis on alcohol awareness and risk management
has shifted power back to the nationals (it was different in the 80's,
IMHO). This puts locals in a unique position to stir things up. That
was the point I was trying to make.

On second thought, perhaps taking an authoritarian stance when dealing
with undergrads isn't such a bad idea....

Oh OK, I didn't realize you were an 80's child like myself. :) It all depends, there are times when a campus looks good and then when the national investigates it further it isn't a good fit, or else the group doesn't fulfill the chartering requirements.

I agree with the rest of your post...I was discussing the show w/ some sisters and said that under no circumstances should we say the minute rushees brought it up "we are nothing like that!!" Because then if the rushee goes on to say "I thought that Leah chick was really cool and that's why I decided to rush" - well, talk about egg on face.

And you're right, it was a LOT different in the 80's. There was a lot more autonomy and leeway to make mistakes and learn. Now if you slip up once (and the slip-ups are much smaller) in any aspect, your goose is cooked. I know risk mgmt is a big issue, but how much can you learn when you have to walk on eggshells all the time?
