Anti-Greek Parents
Okay, I need some help on this one..
My parents are very against me become greek this fall...yeah..I know..this is a common problem. But this is where it gets hairy.. 1. I commute to school so..I'm still living my parental units.. 2. No houses of any GLO on campus or off so, I can't really live there that way my 'rents would be happier. 3. I pledged my first fall for a diff GLO but was made to quit (story-pm me) 4. MTV's Sorority Life..need I say more?? Well, that's the main jist of it..but..one thing that is interesting.. My boyfriend is apart of TKE and lord..they just -loved- the idea of me dating a frater..my mother even sewed on his letters for him on some his his shirts. Plus, when he pinned me, my father insisted to taking pics of me in his letters. *sighs* But, when I want to wear -my own- letters of a soro I'm pretty close to, they are all up against it. *cries out in agony* Somebody help me!! :( Fall is coming up and I don't want to have to tell my best friend that I won't be able to pledge her sorority again! :( |
I had a somewhat similar problem when I wanted to pledge. My mom did not go to college so she was not too educated on the entire greek system in any way. So all she knew of was the stereotypes.
So, when i got a bid to a house I really liked I accepted it...and did not tell my parents. When I finally did they were kinda disapproving. They were convinced that all the sorority wanted was money and it was going to cost a lot of money...blah blah blah. So i said I would pay for it all on my own, and I did and still am. Yet now, it is a year later and my mother absolutely loves the house. She feels safer knowing that I am living in a house with so many girls and that we take safety precautions ( we had some weird things happen on my dorm floor my freshman year and she sort of freaked) She loves Mom's weekend and Dad's Weekend and all the stuff we do for homecoming and greek week. She also liked the fact that....my grades went UP when I pledged. These are the things that parents love to hear about. My advice to you is to do whatever you can to convince them because you may regret it forever. |

*sighs* Well, hopefully this time it will go over better with them. I talked to my mother tonight once more about it, she told me that as long as I keep the good ole grades up and not to have the girls kill me. :p She's still upset w/me pledging -last- fall..so..ya know..gah. Plus, for some reason..just because I have 4 biological sisters, both my 'rents think that's enough sisterhood for me to handle! Oye!

Ummm.....you could do what some of my brothers have done- don't tell your parents! One of my brothers went two years without telling them- they only know because he thought they might get suspicious about him moving into a house with funny letters on it.

I have a similar problem
My mother is a Looney!! She blames everything on my sorority and knows nothing of what we do.She has all the stereotypes of the sorority life. She has now decided not to support my organization and not help pay for dues and such.So I am going to pay for it now.
She also did not go to college and sees me as a bad person for joining. It was my decison and when you go to college you take on responsibilities. This was one of them and my mom just can't seem to let go of me.(I am her only daughter and youngest) So I am treated like a baby. Today I actually had an arguement with her about going to orientation and she was like "Your doing Chi-O Stuff, you don't need to do that" and YADDA,YADDA,YADDA!!I told her I want to go see my sisters and she said NO..Sooo I said I am gonna go hang with my friends..samething,lol. I am old enough and I just can't take it anymore...GRRR!! She is stressing me out. |
When I pledged what was then my local sorority my parents had no clue that I "got caught up in a sorority" as my loving mother puts it. About a semester or 2 after I was already pledged and initiated my parents came to get me from school (before I had a car) and on the way the topic of sororities was brought up and my parents were talking negatively about them. Well I bit my tongue but when we got home, I pulled my dad aside and told him that I was in one and he was like "okay just don't drink please" (little did he know he was a little too late for that) and now my entire family knows and is just fine with it. They ask me about it periodically. And since I pay my dues and stuff they don't complain.
