Ananda Lewis
Hello I am not a greek or anything but I was watching the Ananda Lewis Show sometime last week and the show was about how we see people or how can we tell if what decent people are like mixed, black, white etc. Anyways there was one woman an african american woman that stood up and she was responding to one of the guest because the young lady was mixed and she pledged a "white sorrority" and the woman in the audience was a journalist who wrote an article about how black sorrorities were established for blacks only so that we can gain unity and how she doesnt agree with whites or any other races pledging our sorrorities and frats.
now my question is this, I am still in the process of selecting a sorrority true enough, but I thought that sorrorities in general were about diversing into other races and excepting other races? Is that not so? I guess I am old fashioned but I keep thinking about how I was raised. Although people may have done bad things to you in the past, show them that you are better then them and be more excepting is how i look at it maybe I am wrong? this is being posted on other listings for more feedback |
Our sororities and fraternties were established because we were not accepted by whites. Blacks needed a support and all we had were each other. The greek letter organizations were a support system to our people along with the many other organizations that we were not greek but served the black community.
Today we are still tied to our heritage, our history, and our people. However, a lot of our attention is directed to community service as a whole.Yes, we still help blacks because blacks are still a minority and still do not get adequate and equal treatment. But, we do not turn our backs on people of other colors. Many feel different about this. But in my new experience with Sigma Gamma Rho I have found that we are very diverse and we accept people for who they are as individuals. Thats my $19.22 worth!!! |
when Sigma Gamma Rho was founded (as well as the other BGLOs) it was a time of great racial tension.
however, our sorority was not created to exclude any races and nowhere is it stated that Sigma Gamma Rho is for blacke women only. yes, the divine nine is majority African-Americans. just like other organizations that were created for the advancement and uplifting of our people. but that is not to say that other races should not be allowed to join. any one who is for helping out people in general should do what they feel they need to do. our pupose as a sorority is not to "diverse into other races" it's all about service. if we diverse into other races along the way, then that is fine with me. |
Sorhors HolyGhost7 and RHO-yal Silence,
Well stated ladies! Sigma Gamma Rho and the other members of the divine 9 were organized to provide support, community service and to up lift the race during the time of great racial divide. Many African Americans require and need our assistance because racism and discrimination still exists in many African American communities. Members of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. provide assistance because it will always be one of our main goals to up lift the black race and it's the right thing to do. Our main focus is stated so well with our motto "Greater Service, Greater Progress." However, we always welcome all people to do community service projects with us and Sigma would never close the door on a woman interested in the organization because she is not African American.
