Sorority Life Producers Contacted Us
Hey everyone. This is my one message that I write once in a blue moon when something strange, yet exciting happens. I was recently contacted by the producers of MTV's Sorority Life. Our President is out of town this summer on vacay, and so our Rush Chair has been the one talking to them (the President does know about this).
Just curious if some of you other locals have been contacted since they apparently are only interested in the local sororities. Also, I haven't seen the show yet, but will today -- what do you think about us or even your org doing this? Would it bring more harm than good? |
Run. Run hard, and run fast.
There are many, many threads on the board on this topic... if you do a search you can read quite a bit about peoples opinions about the show, and the groups that have been contacted. |
If you search the boards, you will find dozens of threads that address this topic, including replies from the sorority that is currently being featured on the show.
The reason why they are only contacting locals is because the national groups (rightly) don't want to have anything to do with this production. My advice to you would be to avoid this situation completely. In my opinion this show has done nothing to portray Greek life in a positive manner and has the potential to cause more harm than good. |
I agree with everyone else...RUN AS FAST AS YOU CAN!!
|
I say avoid it. if you ever hope to become more than just local (like one day achieve national status) DO NOT DO THE SHOW. And of course they are only contacting local sororities. Nationals would rather eat dirt than let anyone, let alone MTV, film the new member (pledge) process. And honestly, the sorority that they are airing now (i forgot what their name is, its really long) is probably going to have such a bad rep for a long time. And I wouldn't be surprised if their numbers decreased or at least the fact that girls who are not to their standards will start joining. If you care anything about your sorority, do not do this. All the promotion and fix ups to your house and free stuff that MTV i am so sure gave these people isn't worth it when in the end you are one big joke to the whole greek community which is what these girls are now
|
Once you see the show, you will know why they are all telling you to RUN AS FAST AS YOU CAN!

The name is Sigma Alpha Eplision (sp) Pi...
|
They contacted our sorority yesterday. I told the President of my sorority to ""RUN AS FAST AS YOU CAN!!"
|
eeekkk
I'll echo everyone here.... RUN, RUN AS FAST AS YA CAN!!!!!!!!!!1
|
Seeing as how the greek system at Sam has taken some big hits in the recent past, it would be a smart and prudent decision to pass on the MTV deal. The last thing they need right now is any kind of negative attention...just look at SAEPi...the coverage they are getting is not exactly becoming, and even with the best intentions, you cannot control editing.
My $.02 dzsaigirl |
they contacted us too. twice as a matter of fact. ignore 'em. they will bring nothing but trouble to your house, no matter what your rep on campus is. and in our chapter we would have a small problem... our actives would also want to live in the IKEA overloaded pledge house. :p

hi and thanks for your replies. i will be printing out all the replies i have received so that the girls can discuss the downside to this too at their retreat. everything that you all brought up has for the most part been discussed as far as i know, but they are gung-ho about this, and think they don't have a whole lot to lose since nobody knows about us on campus, and after 10 years, it's dissappointing. I do see your side on this matter, and will share it with my sisers, although it's ulitmately their decision (since i'll be graduating in 2 weeks). the sorority is still following this though, and will meet with some mtv people next week -- will let you know what happens.
|
if nobody knows who you are after 10 years, shouldn't the focus be on campus publicity through philanthropic events or maybe getting your members involved in other organizations on campus to spread the word? I seriously don't think that MTV is the way to get the word out if you guys haven't managed to do it on your own after so long! No offense!
|
I'd just like to add that if you guys really are planning on doing this, try to get in touch with the Sigma AEPi girls first and see what kind of regrets they had about doing the show, whether they'd consider the trade-offs worth it (financial compensation and getting your name out vs. a possible bad reputation for your organization and your girls, loss of privacy, etc.), and so forth. They know better than any of us what it's like to go through the "Sorority Life"/MTV process, and they'll probably give you the best answer as to whether or not to do it.
