i'm broke

Ok, so my parents, (probably wisely on their part) have decided that I need to be emancipated BEFORE I graduate, and therefore, they are giving my financial independence right now. So, from now on I have to pay for a lot of things I never had to pay for before, sorority dues being the one I am most concerned about. Now I think I need to get a job at school in the fall so I can make some $...but in the mean time I do not know what to do!!!!! I have a job, maybe I could get a 2nd job?!?! Has anyone been in this situation before and have any good advice? :(
Thanks!

Are you *totally* financially independent? If so, that sucks. I was put in that situation for different reasons, but I was fortunate enough to have a high-paying internship in town for the last three and a half years of college. I worked 20 hours/week and took a full load, and I had no problems (other than a lack of spare time). Maybe you can find something similar where you go to school.

If you're *not* totally independent, then it's not that big of a deal. You can do odd jobs here and there for decent sums of money paid under the table. Just check your school's job board - there's tons of money to be had.

Or you can always work at McDonalds. ;) :)

You can do it!! I worked two jobs, had five classes, and held several chairs all at the same time...it's all about time management and spending your money wisely. Sit down and make a list of all the things you will have to pay for and make a budget for yourself. :D

I pay for everything on my own. My parents helped with most of my bills the first two years, but after that I was on my own. It's not that hard, just try to find a decent paying job. Thankfully, I have a job that pays great and I only work about 20 hours a week (well not working at all right now, but who cares)!

Are they making you pay your own tuition, books, room, and board, too?? If so, make sure your financial aid package takes that into account.

For your sorority dues, try to work out a payment plan with your treasurer - that way you won't have to write a big check all at once.

As for a job, I graded problem sets for a couple of semesters for some extra $. Is this an option for you? Obviously it wouldn't help you right now...

Oh, if your parents have made you totally financially independent, don't let them claim you as a dependent on their tax return - you probably need the deduction more than they do! :)
