Changing fields?

Ok, this is a two part question.

1. If you had to leave your current job, would you like to try something new or stay in the same field?

2. What is more important: being able to do the job (even if it isn't your "dream" job) or a significant salary increase?

I am being downsized next month and am trying to find a new job. I don't want to go to a pr agency (i'd rather be corporate) and just saw an opportunity at Wayne State in a program coordinator capacity. The hiring minimum is $12,000 more than what I make right now.

All opinions are appreciated!

Re: Changing fields?

1. I would definitely look for something in another field.

2. I would say that there are two important things in a job...you like it and you can do it well.

I'd say go for it. If you don't like it there are always other jobs out there. :)

What is your dream job?

If the money is good, go for it. You may like it and you may hate it. Either way both employee and employer have to stick around.

I'm told that what most employers want is good communications skills (I'm a Communications major so I guess the teachers get paid to teach me that:D ) -- But if that's true than you should theoretically be able to change fields as long as there's not much new technical stuff to deal with fairly easily.

Skills that you know through the Public Relations field I think will help you no matter where you go.

Oh and if you're getting downsized your state unemployment agency can be a great resource to help find jobs (and give you free $$) -- I'm doing a Corporate Video right now for the Oklahoma Unemployment folks and I've been really impressed with their resources.

Good luck!

Sorry this is happening to you. I was laid off a couple of months ago. At least you know it's coming... I got the "today's your last day, go clean out your desk" treatment. :(

I would start by looking for something that's either the same as, or similar to, the work you're doing now. That will probably get you hired most quickly. But while you're looking, it doesn't hurt to prepare for something less directly related to your field. I'm currently studying for a certification in a field that's only tangentially related to the work I was doing - once I get certified, I'll be able to pursue two types of jobs instead of just one.

If you've seen an opportunity advertised, it can't hurt to apply for it. Even if you don't get the job, it will be good interviewing practice.

State unemployment agencies, though, are the spawn of the devil. Yes, they give you unemployment checks, but they make the checks contingent on your going in and attending certain workshops. They have the mentality that if you don't find a job right away, it means you don't know how to look for a job. It has never crossed their minds that people aren't finding jobs because the economy SUCKS @$$ !!! (sorry, I just had to get that out :) )

Good luck! :)

I sent the job description to one of my friends who works in pr as well and she says that based on that, she thinks it would be a great (not to mention fun) job for me. I want to send it out today but can't write a cover letter to save my behind!
