For the fashion Savy GCers out there
First hope everyone is having a wonderful summer ... and that you all have your fabulous tans and memories to last a life time
Ok down to business: I am going to a wedding in a week ( I leave Thursday and the wedding/reception part is Saturday) The problem is I have NO CLUE WHAT TO WEAR!!!! My date's suite is gunmetal with faint pewter pinstrips in it with a pewter shirt underneat... the wedding is allegedly VERY CASUAL so... what is a girl to wear.. Just some Wedding info the wedding is at 10 am Reception is at noon it has been HOT AND MUGGY where I am trying to work with the weather too ... I was thinking black dress but than the with the date gunmetal ect I thought we would look like we are going to a funeral.. I have an orangey/pinky/caviar redy indian print sun dress with the spaghettie straps and criss cross fron and undeneath the bodice right by your rib cage there is a little row of beads ( the colors actually look much better than described) it is really cute I would do brown shoes with it and i have a cool necklace that matches it but would that look too bad with the dates suite I am also going shopping with 2 sisters tonight and shopped last night but struck out :( but I wanted to know if any of the fashion savy GC had any advice on what to wear to a casual 10 am wedding !!! |
I would a dress in a darker color, but not too dark. Like a dark blue/green? I am thinking of a particular dress from Express, but it was there a month ago, not sure if it still is now. Or you could go with a black dress that ha bright flowers on it all over...? Good luck...or just make your date change! :p

I agree with JMUduke, go with a simple dress preferably in a darker color. Even though it's summer, it's sort of late in the summer and it's better you err on the side of more formal.
|
I would suggest either a dark plum-ish color, or black. You can't wear anything with brown, it wouldn't compliment him very well. While black would no doubt be hot, you could combat the heat by getting a linen dress from B.Rep that comes in black and doesn't cost too much. I think J.Crew may have a few linen dresses currently too. That's my opinion...nothing is better in the summer then linen!

If the wedding's at a church, don't wear spaghetti straps (or cover them with a sweater and reveal it all at the reception).
Also, it's traditional not to wear white or black at a wedding, whether it's formal or not. (For women, at least - I mean most guy's suits are black.) You can't go wrong with a simple, traditional sheath in a summery color! |
Beware of two fabrics, linen and polyester. The former is great in the summer but it wrinkles if you even look at it wrong. Polyester doesn't breathe and can be horrible in hot weather. I like the idea of a dark blue or green sleeveless cotton dress, and you can cover your shoulders with a shawl or sweater for the ceremony. Have you thought about a skirt and blouse combination?

Thank you guys so much for your replies.... Fuzzie Alum I kind of agree with you on the white or black rules... Also what kind of color exactly is gun metal ? any sugguestions... my date says it is a neutral so pretty much any color would go with it so I am really at a loss?!?!?
Also from what he said this is a super casual wedding yet I do agree with ya ROWDYsister about it being almost the end of summer and things getting more formal ( yet how casual can it be if he is wearing a suite  ) and these are his friends not mine, so I really want to make a good impression, ( my date who knows me all to well told me not to go overboard because 1-I am know for being a bit clothes crazy and :D like turn every occasion in to a shopping ordeal and 2- this is allegedly casual) so I don't know... JMUDUke I am going to go to express again tonite I think I know the dress you are talking about SigmaChiCard thanks for the boys insight as well as the link :) ... |
I say go with a simple sheath dress with a sweater you can wear if necessary. After all, morning weddings usually aren't that formal.
|
I like the idea of a sheath dress as well, but I would suggest a lighter color as opposed to darker -- it is in the morning, after all, and it is summer.
What I'm wondering -- where did this rule of which some of you speak come from -- that the woman's dress is supposed to go with the guy's suit? I've never heard of such a thing in my life. I say wear whatever the heck you want, and who cares if it goes with what he's wearing??? Women's fashion is tricky enough without color coordinating to men's suits. |
Gunmetal is sort of a dark gray.
I wouldn't worry about matching the guy's suit unless he was wearing a red plaid one ... but then again, I hope I never date a guy who wears a red plaid suit to a wedding! |
Thank guys so much for all the sugguestions.. I guess I didn't make my self clear.. I just want to compliment him not match him like we are going to the prom.. I just realized how silly I must have sounded.. sorry for the confusion I saw a picture of his suit which is really nice but I am still a little concerned so hopefully shopping tonite will help.. but thanks for your help again !!

suggestion
I was just in Ann Taylor the other day and there were some nice light/dark blue/navy combo dresses. They could be appropriate for summer (light blue) or fall (dark blue and navy) based on color and also they were a decent material that isn't gonna be really hot or wrinkle that easily. I don't know how that would look with your date's suit, but I think it may go good.
I guess I feel like if you have to go with a solid color, I'd go with a lighter one. The wedding is in the morning and it's still summer. Now if it were August, I may go for a darker color, but most people who have that type wedding (summer morning) generally would be going more for a lighter color feel. Not that I would know since I'm gonna be single forever :( jk But that's my $0.02. TaraI have a Phi Mu castle... |
PhiMuNursie made an excellent suggestion. Ann Taylor has a bunch of dresses that would be perfect. Also last summer I bought a sheath there that came with a matching sweater. You may want to look into something like that.

A casual black JCrew number
Perhaps you could throw a cardigan that matches his suit over this one A marvelous and versatile dress A classic nuetral and it's on sale at Banana :) I hope this gave you a few ideas for dresses. If you are up for the skirt option, I'll look up a few as well. Although you run the risk of looking Corporate America with a solid skirt set or Easter with a floral one. Good luck |
