Police: Children die in hot car while mom at salon
June 29, 2002 Posted: 6:46 PM EDT (2246 GMT) SOUTHFIELD, Michigan (CNN) -- A Detroit woman whose two small children died in her car while she was getting her hair styled has been taken into custody, police said. "There's no excuse for it. This woman's a criminal. I'm going for murder one," said Southfield Chief of Police Joseph E. Thomas. The woman confessed that she left her 10-month-old daughter and 3-year-old son in her 1995 black Dodge Neon for more than three hours Friday afternoon, Thomas said. Tara Maynor, 25, was a regular at Utopia Salon of Southfield, where she had an appointment Friday to have her hair curled, said the shop owner, Bruce Moore. Around 11 p.m. Friday, officers responded to Providence Hospital on a report that the bodies of the two children had been brought in by their mother. The girl, Acacia Darcell Maynor, and her older brother, Adonnis Dominuque Maynor, were pronounced dead at the hospital, police said. The mother initially told investigators she had been abducted from the parking lot of the salon, raped, and then returned to her car, which was in the lot. There, she said, she found her children still inside the car, according to Thomas. But late Friday night, she confessed that she had left the children unattended in the car for more than three hours during the afternoon, while she was having her hair done, Thomas said. "The temperature was in the mid 80s," he said. "It had to be between 115 and 120 degrees in that car." After the mother discovered her children were dead, she drove around for about an hour, "trying to conjure up an excuse for her actions," Thomas said. Only after concocting the rape story did she take the children to Providence Hospital, Thomas said. The woman is being held in the Oakland County Jail Southfield Annex "pending further review by the prosecutor's office, which will probably come early next week," said Det. John Harris. _____________________________ I am not an advocate of the death penalty by far but this is just downright disgusting. My family doesn't leave my six year old sister ANYWHERE by herself. If my mother has to get her hair done, they both will be getting their hair done. |
Idiot
What a dumb@*&. And to think that she's black, too. Sometimes, we can be our own worst enemies.
UPDATE: Even worse, WDIV-TV in Detroit reported that this creature is pregnant w/a third child. |
OMGoodness how sad! :(
Why didn't she just bring the kids in the salon with her(My salon always has kids floating around while their moms are getting their hair done) or find a babysitter? Or maybe even CANCEL  her appointment? How said to hear that her kids died just so she could get a touch-up! |
No really, was her hair more important thn her childrens' lives?

Accidental whatever....
Susan Smith part 2. It sounds premeditated to me because she's black and she knows she won't be in and out the salon in an hour no matter how short the hair. I can't believe there wasn't some sort of reminder in the salon whether it was kids in the place, a picture, or somone talking about them to jog her memory.
It's funny how people won't stay out too long running errands because they got milk or ice cream in the car, but will leave their kids for hours in the car like it isn't a thing. |
I don't have any kids, but I personally feel if I found my children dead in a carwhether it's my fault or not, I would not be in the right frame of mind for a while to even think about conjuring up a story to save myself. So It leaves you wondering did she do it on purpose. It's been too many stories in the news about leaving your kids unattended in a hot car that she can't say she didn't know better. If I tried to attempt something like that, my actions would give me away because my conscience would eat me alive

As far as the thread, DANG! That is a sh*tty boo boo on the real! I would wager ANYTHING that we find out in a few weeks that SOME kind of circumstance came up where she wanted to get rid of her children. Susan Smith part 2 is right! And vanda, I feel you about trying to conjure up a story. Gawd! |
I have a million questions
Why didn't she take the kids inside the salon with her? What hairdresser do you know that never has kids in it?
The baby girl was ten months old and the little boy was three, and you think that they'll be alright inside a car?!?!?!? You can't leave kids that young alone for a second, let alone three hours. What was she thinking? I'm just so mad right that I can barely think straight. This lady makes me want to walk to Detroit and bust her azz!! I just don't understand. Did she come back out to check on them? Didn't anybody coming or going from the hairdresser see them inside the car? What in the world made you think that saying you were raped would work? Didn't you know that they were going to examine you to see signs of a stuggle? Wouldn't the doctor notice that you don't have any signs of sexual intercourse, you have no bruises, and your hair is hooked up and your curls look fresh? Finally, how in the world can you drive around with your dead children in the car while you think of an idea? |
Even scarier
I'm actually going to try to follow this on the news.
I wouldn't be surprised, as this goes through the courts, that some self-styled "activist" type , will take up for this "mother," spinning a pity her because she's poor, black, yatata yatata, so her utter lack of common sense and parenting skills can be forgotten. Sorry, that is not acceptable. |

Well, Sisterfriend, I can understand that we all make mistakes. But THIS was like the ULTIMATE mistake (to say the least). Her children are DEAD!!! It's not like they were left in the car for 7 hours and didn't get anything to eat or something like that (although THAT'S bad too). Those babies are DEAD because of her SELFISHNESS, STUPIDNESS, and utter DISREGARD for the safety and welfare of her children. It has absolutely NOTHING to do with poverty or being Black. It seems to me that she wasn't THAT poor if she was a REGULAR at this salon. Also, if someone wants to defend her actions by playing the "poverty" and "race" cards, then a fair question would be, why did she have children in the first place? On top of THAT, this woman isn't a child or teenager. Heck, she's 25 years old. So, I SERIOUSLY doubt THAT particular defense could be anything that would hold any weight. As a matter of fact, it has NOTHING to do with her even being IGNORANT because she WASN'T. This woman came up with an elaborate story to try and cover her tracks. That only tells me ONE thing. SHE KNEW WHAT SHE DID WAS WRONG!!! But I think that, if she REALLY loved her children, the GUILT of what she's done will be an awesome and overwhelming burden to bear for the rest of her life. Therefore, whatever sentence she receives is going to seem minute. I can say that I'm glad to see that she DOES have some kind of conscious because she DID finally tell the truth. Can you imagine riding around in a car with your children's dead bodies in the back? She was probably in total shock. You can tell from her picture that she HAS TO be feeling SOMETHING. GOD, what's wrong with people today??? All I can say is Lord, have mercy!!!! However, you are right, Sisterfriend, her actions are UNEXCUSEABLE and UNACCEPTABLE. |

This just tears at me, although I'm not a parent and it is not highly likely that I will be one (I'm in my late 30s, have had female health problems and most importantly, haven't found any man who is eligible, desirable and marriage-minded.) As someone who would love to get married and have a baby, this story just burns me up and I will be incensed if some freak tries to explain away what happened to those poor little babypeople. |
How could anyone even twists their mouth to form a defense for this woman. I pray that our community has moved beyond the "we can't be responsible for our actions position" This woman was an adult...she wasn't a teen age mother.
I used to live in Detroit and a good friend of mine that was a policeman used to say that the city should take all the drug addicts downtown, line them up and shoot them, we need to add ignorant assholes to the list. |
Another left in the car story....
It was reported in the news this morning that a man in New York (forgot which part) had left his 18-month old granddaughter in the care while he went to the store. He told the police that he forgot to take her out. WHAT????  The baby was found unconscious in the car that was about 108 degrees inside of it. She is now in the hospital. Grandpa better pray that this little girl makes a full recovery. What explanation can he possibly give to the girl's parents?????
