The Economy & Layoffs
 

The end of last year I was laid off my job due to the events of Sept 11 and most companies thinking that a recession was in the works.:(


Since then I have gotten a new job. But the past couple of weeks slowly people at my current job have disappeared one by one. Just today 4 people have been let go!!This to me is ridiculous. I work for a branch of the federal government and it doesn't seem imaginable to me.So I have since found another job. But the other people left working here are only wondering when they will get that call saying their time is up!

Has job stability become a thing of the past?:confused:

Laaawwwwd, I hope not :eek:!!! But your situation is the very reason that I wholeheartedly am working towards entrepreneurship. It's always better to be the one writing the pink slips than to be the one receiving them.

Job stability is absolutely a thing of the past. The days of a job for life are long gone and will probably never return. I thought my job was safe until a few weeks ago when I got a nasty surprise. :( And it seems that no one is hiring! :( What can you do... other than continue to keep an eye out for employment opportunities, even if you are employed.

There is stability in Education, even though we are not being paid TOP dollar, when have you heard of schools systems shutting down? They may have serious budget woes, but they are not downsizing, if anything MORE independent districts are popping up. Eventually, there will be many running our way trying to work 180 days and off at least 8 weeks. THEN, I'll be making some REAL dollars with a whole lot of seniority, LMAO at the "newbies". LMAO

In Chicago, the budget woes have started to manifest into layoffs, though no "classroom personnel" have been hit, yet. Additionally, three schools have been closed, leaving about 2/3 of the employees, including teachers, without jobs so far. Our city will be laying off about 425 city employees, police employees have been told to scale back overtime, etc., so we are in a climate in which I'm not so sure that education/government jobs are the last bastion of job security/stability.

To answer the original thread question, I thought we saw job stability go out the window during the last recession around 1990-93...many of us may have not felt it because we were students, but right now, my hubby and I are feeling it full force. He just started a temporary contract job last week, after a full six months of looking for full-time work. Hopefully, this will turn into a permanent position, or one of his other irons in the fire will bear fruit, but I'm hearing that it's taking anywhere from nine months to a year to find a job.

The answer isn't in job stability, it's in SPIRITUAL stability. Having the "peace that passes all understanding" is the only thing that can see us through, yall.

Guess what?
You'll see the custodians, cafeteria workers, bus drivers, assistants let go before you will see a teacher let go. Many districts are contracting out for transportation and cleaning services. Those teachers, administrators that were at schools that closed will more than likely be transferred to other sites, but they will not be given a pink slip. STILL, people are ALWAYS having children and they have to be educated, so teachers don't have too much to worry about.

Yeah it is true if you think about it.Teachers will always be in demand because everyone wants to be educated. I will be graduating in May of next year with a degree in human resources. I thought about maybe trying to teach college,someday in the future.But with some of the horror stories I have heard about people in HR being followed home, etc. I don't know. My friend works at Geico insurance.She has been there for over 2 yrs and I believe that have not done layoffs in years.
Hmmmm...maybe I should try insurance?:rolleyes:

We'll I'm here in the thick of things. If you want to talk scandal, mis-management, shady auditing practices and layoffs.. well that would be my employer. Today's the day of layoffs.. and i'm sitting here wondering if my name is on the list to go.

Nothing in the world prepares you to see someone you know come out of a conference room with betrayal with a hint of "what's next" written all over their face.

Yes there is stability in Education. Although I am not a teacher (I work on the Administrative side) I know my job isn't going anywhere. :D

Urbane, i am sending up a prayer for you right now as i type this. I pray that no matter what happens today that you stay confident in HIS ability to work things out. From my limited understanding of the Worldcom and Enron events, i think somebody from Arther Andersen needs to be in jail, right now!

There is also some job stability in healthcare. No matter what the economy is doing, people are still going to get sick and need healthcare. Although I am not a part of the clinical staff I feel that there is a better stability in the health field compared to ther job markets.

Definately job stability is a thing of the past. The days of loyalty are long gone. I remember my dad telling me back in the day if you worked for a company 10-15 years you didn't have anything to worry about but now I heard of a guy who worked for a company 18 years, was one of the their best employees and he got let go to his dismay. It's scary if you think about it. Nowadays I don't think, man, I want to make $100K before I turn 30. Now I think, man, will I have a job when I turn 30.

Yay career students?

Seriously though, I decided to go back to school and take some classes when I couldn't find a job that I WANTED.
