GR Is Not a Good Source
http://www.thedailybeast.com/article...gregation.html
Here's the story from "The Daily Beast". It's about racism in the Greek system at Southern Methodist University, particularly Panhellenic. An African-American student posted on Gr**kR**k (i.e. the site that shall not be named) about how tough it is be an African-American women trying to get a bid in an NPC organization at SMU. Anyone who has been on GR can, with very little imagination, guess how she was responded to. Most of the responses were uncalled for; many were reprehensive. I'm not going to sit here and claim that we have eradicated racism in the Greek system; we haven't. It is still a problem in many chapters on many campuses. But, to use GR as the totem to hold the Greek system against, I have a problem. (FWIW, I also have a major problem with the responses and attitude directed toward this young lady.) GR is a sh**stirring site in my opinion. I truly think that the majority of it is trolls who simply try to say outrageous things just to be shocking. And, again, I'm not going to pretend that some of the remarks posted aren't shared by some members of Greek organizations. I just have trouble believing that this "news" organization is going to paint an entire campus and Panhellenic system based on an anonymous website known for its outrageous remarks. If you've never had the "pleasure" of visiting GR and you're a long-time GC poster, think of somE of the people Who used to post on here. |
I'm relatively new to this site so I don't know who you are referring to, but that GR site is horrible. Can't believe a news org would use that site as a source. Sloppy 'journalism.'

I guess this idiot from The Daily Beast missed where the poster who gave those horrible top 10 reasons got their ass handed to them on a plate from several dozen people who were aghast at such blatant racism. Also her post was heavily downvoted. As for the original topic of the thread, it's something we've discussed here.

Don't tell us, tell that "news" organization.
Anonymous boards are worth what you pay to view them. Zero. |
I tried to find a comment section for the "news" story, and couldn't. I would have been happy to tell them my thoughts. :-)

But the writer DOES have a twitter account -- the link is under his byline.

GR is a joke. I use it for popcorn and a good laugh.

I already got lots of snarky replies from him on twitter. He totally deflected on the topic of his source and made it about racism.
He just wants to start a twitter war. |
<sigh> The local Houston paper just picked up this story. I don't know what worse. Using GR as a source or The Daily Beast.

And he wasn't snarky in the least. You just didn't agree with him. In fact, it was you who was snarky with him in the first place: "Using Greekrank as a news source for an article is like using your toothbrush to clean the toilet. Total stupidity." Like yikes. For real? |
GreekRank is worse than a used toothbrush...that you just used to brush your butt.
|
Greek Rank sucks but I personally feel it's fair game for journalists. It's a pretty well known site, that is actively involved in and is basically an on-line forum.
We may not like it but this is a site that our actives engage in. |
The fact that the writer used GR -- an anonymous opinion-based website as FACT -- is BAD journalism and total stupidity.
