Pumpkin - another movie stereotype!?

Here's a movie to look for soon: Pumpkin, starring Christina Ricci

http://us.imdb.com/Title?0265591

Release dates:
14 January 2002 (Sundance Film Festival)
28 June 2002 (limited)

Perky, perfect Carolyn and her Alpha Omega Pi sisters plan to win Sorority of the Year by impressing the Greek Council with a killer charity: coaching mentally challenged athletes for the regional Challenged Games. When Carolyn's assigned to coach Pumpkin she's terrified at first, but soon sees in him something she's never seen before: a gentle humanity and honest clarity that touches her soul. To the horror of her friends and Pumpkin's overprotective mother, Carolyn falls in love, becoming an outcast in the process. As Carolyn's "perfect life" falls apart, Pumpkin teaches her that perfect isn't always perfect after all.

I saw info about this when the Sundance Film Festival ended. I think Ricci won an award for her performance (if I'm remembering correctly).

Not sure what to think about the movie yet...

Maybe I'm reading into it differently, but I think it sounds like it would be a major positive PR thing for greek life! a movie about sororities that shows them doing philanthropy for most of the time instead of 90 minutes of "here's the girls partying...oh, and yeah, they did a philanthropy too, but only because they had to" sort of thing.

But as I said, maybe I"m reading it differently

EDITED TO SAY: WOOPS!!!! I didn't read it all the way through, apparently. I missed the whole part about her becoming an outcast and all that. Hello. Okay, I take everything I said back!

Ginger is right...it sounded okay until the outcast part.

You could look it this way, an individual sorority girl having the guts to stand up to the group. We're not usually portrayed this way.

I think it's interesting that Christina Ricci is playing the stereotypical sorority chick. Usually she plays darker characters. She's attractive, but certainly not in the buxon, blonde, gleaming teeth way people picture when they want to stereotype us.

She's blonde with big boobs in the movie. Gotta love Hollywood :)

Gotta love the one of the girls in front of the house in bikini tops and hula skirts. ;)

I saw this film at Sundance. Aside from all the stereotypical greek stuff, it is a really good film. Christina Ricci did a wonderful job as well as her co-star. I think the good message portrayed in the movie overshadows the sorority images. I definitly recommend seeing it. :)

In any social group or setting someone who fell in love with a mentally disabled person would be an outcast. It's a sad but true fact. I don't think it makes sororities look bad for this reason. No one is going to see the movie and be like, Ahhh sororities are groups of people who hate the mentally disbabled. Also someone made a comment about Chrisitina Ricci having blond hair and big boobs for the movie. Well she always has big boobs, not just in this movie, kinda unescapable. And from the pics that I see she's the only blonde. I think that before you get all up in arms you might want to see the movie. It is my thoughts that Christina Ricci rarely (if ever) does the sort of fluff piece that would make fun of sorority life. I have a feeling that the movie is far deeper than the fact she is greek and that is merely a trapping of the character. I think that we should all go out and see this movie, it looks like it's a moving and interesting one!

I am actually looking forward to seeing this movie.
I think it will be interesting & thought provoking....

I am also curious about Christina Ricci's sorority in the movie...
I wonder if Alpha Omega Pi is nicknamed AOII, just like Alpha Omicron Pi is nicknamed AOII??

Person First!

The cry you hear from any Clarion SPED major:

PERSON FIRST DAMMIT!

"coaching mentally challenged athletes"

should atleast be:

Athletes with mental disabilites

Duh.

Damn people writing reviews!

person first...

So the athlete with mental disability (is he a runner?) and the pretty blonde girl with a unique streak fall in love...

like....Forest Gump? :D

I saw this movie at a small, independent theatre, where it was only showing for 2 days.
(I don't think it did very very well at the regular cinema's box office)

It was pretty good, but definitely dark....sort of like along the lines of "Heathers". Christina Ricci was great in it. Some of the dialog was a bit vapid though.

Has anyone else seen this movie? I hear its on video now. I wonder if its worth the 3 bucks to rent it.
