Pregnant Cat
 

Ok I know you people love animals and I remember one person being a vet on this forum, so please give me some advice.

One of our cats got pregnant a while back and, yesterday, i woke up and saw what looked like cranberry juice on the floor. After yelling at my sister for running around dropping her juice everywhere (she drinks cranberry juice a lot), I found out it wasn't her. Then the cat got up and there was a little puddle (not too much but a little). Since the cat was pregnant, I figured this was due to that.

So all day the blood would stop, and then start again like that. I would try and put it in a box with towels and it would try anything to get out. I would put it in a bigger box and finally ran out of boxes that could hold it. So i let it walk around and every once in a while it would make strange noises...like it was straining. Anyway I took a nap and my sister came home and saw the cat give birth to one kitten. Evidently the kitten was dead, so we took that away later when the cat left it alone. The cat was way larger than a kitten should be so possibly it was in there for too long. So here's the thing...the cat is still big. What's going on here? I'm almost positive she has another bad boy in there. Are cats pregnant over several days? I'm freaking out here...please help me.

I'm the vet. She is having a dystocia (hard time giving birth).. You need to take her to the vet. ASAP this AM. The kittens can die and may be dead already but I am more concerned about her. They may remain in her uterus and cause a horrible infection which can result in death -of the mother(I see this all to often). She needs a C-section-I recommend spaying also as there is a huge pet overpopulation problem and we don't need her to get pregnant again adding to that population problem. The chances of the kittens being alive are probably low but your regular vet. may be able to do an ultrasound to look for fetal heartbeats. It really doesn't matter though-she needs them out now and C-section is a way to do this IMO. The other option is to try oxytocin/Calcium Gluconate injections which will cause more uterine contractions but if she was seen straining already and no kittens were produced-I would not give Oxytocin b/c this will make her strain even more and she could possibly rupture her uterus=very sick cat if this happens. Let me know if you have anymore questions. I will be going to bed soon (I work at night) so I may not get back to rt. away, but take her to a vet. now!!

Thank you. Right now I'm not sure what to do. My parents don't think there's anything wrong, and I have no way of going to the vet on my own. This is really upsetting because I feel this is putting me in an awful position and I don't know what to do. I will keep trying to convince them and I printed out your post. Thank you.

Let your parents know that by waiting it may make things worse which = more expense (ie more time in hospital, sometimes they come into the emergency clinic at night-where I work, we charge about 3 times what a day practice charges-again more expense). I see people wait days and the cat then is really sick and requires more treatment. Obviously I don't know if this is the case with your cat but it is best to seek attention immediately so this does not happen. Good luck.

I can vouch for this... I just spent $600 on my cat at an emergency after-hours clinic. It would've been half that much, or less, if I'd been able to take him to a regular vet during standard hours.

I just didn't wait at one point and took it to the vet. She thought perhaps the placenta might be in there but she wasn't sure. I never saw any "green" things come out, which she said would be an indication that it came out. Anyway, she gave it some shot just in case. It's still a fat cat and now it's scared of me, but at least i can be sure it's ok. Thank you for your help :) You're really kind.
